Liverpool, League champions and First Division leaders, were within a minute of an inglorious FA Cup exit. Blackburn Rovers, 19th in the Second Division, were leading 1-0 when the ball squirted out of play on the left flank of their defence. An obliging ball-girl returned the ball to Steve Nicol, who threw it to Ray Houghton. His cross went over Gary Gillespie, who was baulked by a defender, and flew agonisingly off the foot of Blackburn right-back Mark Atkins into his own goal.

 Au lendemain de Noël, le championnat d'Angleterre reprend déjà ses droits lundi 26 décembre pour la 18e journée, lors du traditionnel Boxing Day, qui verra notamment Manchester City se rendre à West Bromwich alors que MU accueille Wigan et Chelsea Fulham. Sur le papier, ces oppositions apparaissent plutôt déséquilibrées. Contrairement à l'an dernier, quand Arsenal avait reçu et battu Chelsea, il n'y aura, en effet, pas de match de gala cette fois, mais uniquement des confrontations "gros contre petits". Ce Boxing Day aura ainsi des airs de 32es de finale de Coupe où, tout en étant supérieurs, les "Goliath" comme Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal et Liverpool, devront se méfier des "David" – dans l'ordre WBA, Wigan, Norwich, Fulham, Wolves et Blackburn. Les "gros" de la Premier League prolongeront donc leur festin de Noël, à moins qu'ils ne souffrent d'une indigestion de dinde ou de bûche. Ce lendemain de fête est important : la course au titre est déjà très disputée entre City et United, les deux voisins, ennemis jurés, séparés par deux points seulement, tout comme celle pour la prochaine Ligue des champions entre les quatre autres, qui se tiennent en cinq points.

La très mauvaise affaire de la semaine. Resté sur une défaite devant Aston Villa, Manchester City a été tenu en échec par Birmingham (2-2), mercredi, lors de la suite de la 25e journée de Premier League. Les hommes de Roberto Mancini, toujours 3e, lâchent le leader Manchester United et son dauphin Arsenal. Mardi, les Red Devils l'avaient emporté contre Aston Villa (3-1), grâce à Rooney, alors que les Gunners ont arraché les trois points devant Everton (2-1). Chelsea, également vainqueur, à Sunderland (2-4), revient donc sur City.

 Pour prendre un raccourci commode, City est à United ce qu'Everton est à Liverpool. Une équipe au palmarès ordinaire, écrasée par l'ombre envahissante de son voisin. Un club sans destin tragique et sans épopée à partager. Un nain de l'Europe, avec pour seul trophée une Coupe des Coupes gagnée en 1970. Un citoyen de seconde zone, en somme, avec ses quelques moments de gloire, ,aujourd'hui du siècle dernier, avant-guerre ou dans les années 60. mais surtout avec son avalanche de frustrations et d'ambitions déçues. Et, au fond, cette image de perdant qui lui colle à la peau depuis une éternité. La donne est peut-être en train de changer. Si, en 2003, City a quitté Maine Road et l'environnement glauque du Moss Side pour aller s'installer plus à l'est dans un stade flambant neuf et un quartier en rénovation, et si les pétrodollars de Cheikh Mansour, son propriétaire émirati, ont profondément modifié son train de vie depuis trois ans, ses supporters continuent pourtant de cultiver leur différence.

The South American pair Ardiles and Ricardo Villa, Ardiles especially, added strength and guile to a team built around the languid talents of Glenn Hoddle. With a natural finisher in Scots international Steve Archibald. only a creaky back four let them down. But fortune srniled on them. QPR. Hull, Coventry and Exeter were ail despatched at White Hart Une. Only Wolves barred their way.After an enteruining 2-2 draw. Tottenham enjoyed the distinct and unfair advantage of a replay at Highbury, Urged on by local support packing three sides of the ground, two frotn Gardi Crooks and a rocket from Ricky Villa sent Spurs' fans streaming from NS wilh an unac-customed warm glow.

   At Forest Brian Clough's side included ex-Derby players John McCovern, John O'Hare and Archie Gemmill,together with former Liverpool stopper Larry Lloyd. Clough added Kenny Burns, turning the former Birmingham City bad boy into the Footballer of the Year. There was also Viv Anderson, a young attacking full-back who became England's first black player when he took the field against Czechoslovakia on 29 November 1978. But the key acquisition was probably Peter Shilton, bought from Stoke for £270,000, the highest amount ever paid for a goalkeeper. Forest lost just three games all season, conceding only 24 league goals, and took the title with four games to spare. Clough followed in the illustrious footsteps of Herbert Chapman in taking two clubs to the championship. Forest also got the better of Liverpool in the 1978 League Cup Final, a John Robertson penalty settling the issue at Old Trafford after a goalless draw at Wembley.  Having been pipped for domestic honours twice, Liverpool made sure they didn't finish the season empty-handed by retaining their European crown. FC Bruges were their Wembley opponents.
