Hambourg est l'un des favoris de la Coupe d'Europe 1979-1980, au même titre que Not-tingham Forest ou le Real Madrid. Il a remporté, quelques mois plus tôt, le quatrième titre de champion d'Allemagne de son histoire, le précédent remontant à 1960, du temps de Uwe Seeler. Il affiche un équilibre collectif, une puissance et un tempérament qui ne sont pas ceux d'un vassal. Il rêve de conquérir, après la Coupe des Coupes (1977), le trophée des seigneurs et d'entamer ainsi un règne de longue durée, à la manière du Bayern de Beckenbauer. Le Beckenbauer du H.S.V., c'est l'Anglais Kevin Keegan qui a réalisé, au cours de la saison précédente, l'un des meilleurs parcours sportifs de son existence. Grâce à Netzer, le directeur sportif- qui a éloigné les réfractaires à Keegan - et grâce à Zebec, l'entraîneur, qui a marié tous les éléments mis à sa disposition, le joueur anglais est devenu un brillant chef de manœuvre sans rien perdre de ses qualités de soliste. Il a reformé avec Hrubesch un duo presque aussi efficace que le célèbre tandem de Liverpool, Keegan-Toshack. Il compte sur la Coupe d'Europe pour affirmer, au niveau du continent, les qualités exceptionnelles qui font de lui un double Ballon d'or de France Football (1978, 1979).

As many Liverpool supporters had anticipated two weeks  earlier,  after seeing Dynamo Tbilisi  in action   at  Anfield,   the   shortcomings   of  Bob Paisley's team were cruelly exposed in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. On a wet afternoon, with the rain falling incessantly from a grey sky, a euphorie crowd of around 80,000 at the Dynamo Stadium watched Tbilisi give Liverpool a roasting. It was one of the Reds's worst defeats in Europe. Liverpool were well below par. They had not made a confident start to the season, having won only twice in their opening seven league games. Bob Paisley had been quick to argue that Liverpool's mediocre performance at Anfield had made Tbilisi look better than they were, but this was not borne out by the events of the second leg. Dynamo Tbilisi were well worth their moment of glory. They were a fine team. Nodar Akhalkatsi's team went on to win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981, and many of their players would make a mark in international football. In Tbilisi, against Liverpool, they reigned suprême.
