Premier League 2011 2012 Money Time Manchester City Sunderland & Blackburn Manchester United

Premier League 2010 2011 Manchester United Sunderland

Club Spotlight : Sunderland History
Having won six Championships before the Second World War and survived in the Football League from 1890 until 1958 without ever being relegated, Sunderland cherished their claim to be the only club never to play outside the top flight. However, since that first ever relegation in 1958, 'The Lads' have become one of the proverbial 'Yo-Yo' clubs and haven't finished in the top half of the top division since ninth place was achieved in 1956. Considering this prolonged period of failure at the top level - with the sole exception of the glorious day in 1973 when Sunderland became the first Second Division side in forty-two years to win the FA Cup - it is amazing that Sunderland can still count on such sizeable and optimistic support. Then again, it is the fact that Sunderland have such fanatical followers that makes them such a fascinating club.

English Leagues the 70s: The Big Match January 1978 1979
Although England were not present, the World Cup in Argentina precipitated a revolution in the Football League. In a wave of ticker-tape, Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa arrived at Tottenham, Alberto Tarrantini joined Birmingham and Alex Sabella linked up with Sheffield United. Suddenly, overseas players were all the rage. Arnold Muhren brought his subtle skills from Holland to Ipswich, Ivan Golac became a popular full-back at Southampton and, within 18 months, nearly every First and Second Division club had at least flirted with imports. Jimmy Hill, discussing the affair with Everton manager Gordon Lee in the first Match of the Day of the new season, thought that it was a positive step. 'We've always been too insular in our thinking,' was the verdict of the BBC's soccer pundit. Come November, Hill's own island was invaded. ITV announced they had pulled off an exclusive deal with the Football League for future coverage of their matches. It was headlined: 'Snatch of the Day'. The referee from the Office of Fair Trading blew his whistle on the deal. But the BBC lost their inherent right to Saturday night football. For the next four seasons, the two channels would alternate, with Match of the Day switching to Sunday afternoons for seasons 1980/1 and 1982/3.

FA Cup 1972 1973 Leeds Sunderland
Final
5 May 1973
Wembley Stadium,
London
Referee Ken Burns
Attendance 100,000
Sundeland became the first Division Two side lo win the FA Cup for 42 years when they beat Leeds 1-0 at Wembley, and at the end manager Bob Slokoe ran on to the field straight into the arms of keeper Jim Montgomery. For "Monty" had made a double save midway through the second half that denied Leeds when an equalizer seemed inevitable, with one of the most remarkable pieces of goalkeeping ever seen. Before the match, Sunderland were given no chance. Leeds were the Cup-holders, had finished third in fhe League and were in the final of the European Cup-Winners' Cup. They were a mean side and had seen it all before. Sunderland, though, had a tremendous Wearside following and, as their Cup run progressed, they became infected by the fanaticism of a wonderful crowd. And the manner in which they had beaten Arsenal in the semi-final should have been a warning. At Wembley, they matched Leeds in spirit and showed no little skill. But it was still a shock when they look the lead through Ian Porterfield in the 52nd minute from their first corner. Leeds proceeded to grind away at Sunderland, yet the individual flair that might have made the breakthrough appears to have been sacrificed in this side for the sake of "professionalism".
