League Cup 1970 1971 Tottenham Aston Villa
Attendance: 100,000
Referee: J. Finney
Aston Villa are no more nervous about F% playing at Wembley in the League Cup Final than a man collecting his wage packet after a week of hard work. The confidence that rubbed off on them in their memorable Semi-Final victory over humiliated Manchester United has become a permanency in Villa's approach to football. In fact, judged by the outward calm of Team Manager Vic Crowe — is he ever anything else but calm? — the League Cup Final could be on February 27, 1972, instead of this month. Crowe told Shoot: "We have got our priorities right, which means promotion to the Second Division is number one. "The Final at Wembley is number two. I'm not saying we don't want to win it. Nothing would thrill us more. What I am saying is that this match is a long way from our minds at this moment.

Premier League 2011 2012 Manchester United Arsenal
Old Trafford Manchester
If Arsenal were in poor shape before this fixture, the devastation at Old Trafford has left them in a chaotic state. Injuries cannot account for this mauling that included the dismissal of Carl Jenkinson, with a second yellow card, when the score was 6-2. Manchester United were pitiless, with Ashley Young lashing their eighth in stoppage time Arsenal have failed to keep pace with United for some years, but this match showed that Sir Alex Ferguson's team is almost out of view. Considering the weakness of the line-up Arsène Wenger had to select, with the centre-half Thomas Vermaelen ruled out by a thigh injury and the teenager Francis Coquelin making his debut in midfield, it was natural that the visitors should suffer. Even so, nobody envisaged such humiliation.

Probably the most high profile game between City and West Bromwich Albion was our first ever League Cup Final win back in 1970. Memorably it was played on a muddy snowy Wembley surface famously described by Blues’ manager Joe Mercer as “a pig of a pitch”. It was a long way short of the bowling green surface everyone had come to expect of England’s home stadium but it was hardly surprising given that The Horse Of The Year Show had been held at Wembley just days earlier, an unthinkable scenario in today’s world where perfection is demanded from players, sponsors and a global audience of millions.
However despite the condition and wintry weather, referee James passed the game fit to play. Fans of both teams had earlier volunteered to help clear the snow and probably saved the match from postponement.
