Premier League 2011 2012 Manchester United Arsenal

28 August 2011
Old Trafford Manchester

If Arsenal were in poor shape before this fixture, the devastation at Old Trafford has left them in a chaotic state. Injuries cannot account for this mauling that included the dismissal of Carl Jenkinson, with a second yellow card, when the score was 6-2. Manchester United were pitiless, with Ashley Young lashing their eighth in stoppage time Arsenal have failed to keep pace with United for some years, but this match showed that Sir Alex Ferguson's team is almost out of view. Considering the weakness of the line-up Arsène Wenger had to select, with the centre-half Thomas Vermaelen ruled out by a thigh injury and the teenager Francis Coquelin making his debut in midfield, it was natural that the visitors should suffer. Even so, nobody envisaged such humiliation.

Probably the most high profile game between City and West Bromwich Albion was our first ever League Cup Final win back in 1970. Memorably it was played on a muddy snowy Wembley surface famously described by Blues’ manager Joe Mercer as “a pig of a pitch”. It was a long way short of the bowling green surface everyone had come to expect of England’s home stadium but it was hardly surprising given that The Horse Of The Year Show had been held at Wembley just days earlier, an unthinkable scenario in today’s world where perfection is demanded from players, sponsors and a global audience of millions.
However despite the condition and wintry weather, referee James passed the game fit to play. Fans of both teams had earlier volunteered to help clear the snow and probably saved the match from postponement.

Uefa Cup 1979 1980 Crvena Zvezda Bayern München

Third Round,
Second Leg
12 December 1979
Stadion Crvena Zvezda  Marakana Belgrad
Referee: Hilmi

TO UPDATE Focus On : Liam Brady Story

Liam Brady is a true Irish soccer great. It is a major regret for many Republic of Ireland fans that this wonderful soccer talent was never displayed in a major international championship finals. Injury, bad luck and his inability to adapt fully to the Jack Charlton football philosophy all conspired to prevent him from appearing in the finals of either the Euro Championship or World Cup. Undoubtedly Liam Brady was the most Irish talented footballer of his generation and he went on to play for top soccer clubs in England and Italy. Brady was born, and raised in the 1960's, in Dublin. As a schoolboy he played for the northside Dublin football club St Kevin's Boys and very quickly came to the attention of the Irish based scouts for English top flight clubs. While Brady was playing his schoolboy soccer in Ireland the English First Division (the fore runner of the Premier League) was being dominated by football clubs from the North of England. Clubs from London were struggling to make the big breakthrough. Nevertheless it was London club Arsenal that attracted a 13 year old Liam Brady over for soccer trials. With hindsight it seems obvious that the young Brady would impress the Arsenal staff with his footballing gifts in general and his sublime left foot. Equally the professionalism in approach and the high quality set up at Highbury impressed Brady. In 1971, at the age of 15, Brady moved across to Arsenal on a full-time basis.

First Round Second Leg
3 octobre 1979
Boris Paichadze  Stadium

As many Liverpool supporters had anticipated two weeks  earlier,  after seeing Dynamo Tbilisi  in action   at  Anfield,   the   shortcomings   of  Bob Paisley's team were cruelly exposed in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. On a wet afternoon, with the rain falling incessantly from a grey sky, a euphorie crowd of around 80,000 at the Dynamo Stadium watched Tbilisi give Liverpool a roasting. It was one of the Reds's worst defeats in Europe. Liverpool were well below par. They had not made a confident start to the season, having won only twice in their opening seven league games. Bob Paisley had been quick to argue that Liverpool's mediocre performance at Anfield had made Tbilisi look better than they were, but this was not borne out by the events of the second leg. Dynamo Tbilisi were well worth their moment of glory. They were a fine team. Nodar Akhalkatsi's team went on to win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981, and many of their players would make a mark in international football. In Tbilisi, against Liverpool, they reigned suprême.

FA Cup 1993 1994 Manchester United Chelsea

Final
14 May 1994
Wembley Stadium London

Referee David Elleray
Attendance 79,634

The final score was emphatic, but it disguised the fact that for an hour Chelsea looked the better team at a wet Wembley and United were clinging to the ropes for much of the time. Gavin Peacock hit the bar in the first half and a tide of blue shirts threatened to swamp Schmeichel's area. But this United side was made of durable material and they picked up their game in the final half-hour to pull away over the closing stages, inspired to a great extent by the strut and swagger of their French talisman, Cantona.

C1 1977 1978 Borussia Monchengladbach Liverpool

Semi Final First leg
29 March 1978
Rheinstadion

Bob Paisley flinched when he heard thé draw for the Européen Cup semi-finals. Although Liverpool would hâve had a testing time against either Juventus or FC  Bruges, Borusssia  Monchengladbach were the team he really feared. Liverpool had beaten Udo Lattek's West German champions in the previous year's final, and in a UEFA Cup Final in 1973, but Bob Paisley knew Borussia would be yearning for revenge. Liverpool had only rarely reproduced the form that had won them the Champions' Cup. The spirit of Rome had somehow been missing. The league championship looked lost, and they had been beaten by Nottingham Forest in thé League Cup Final, a trophy which had not found its way into the Liverpool locker. The European Cup offered thé last hope of success. Borussia knew that there was no Keegan, or Toshack, the Welshman having departed for Swansea City to become player-manager. The Germans, meanwhile, looked a stronger side than a year before, though they had scraped into thé semi-finals after losing 3-1 at SSW Innsbruck. In Germany, the talk was ail of revenge. Liverpool needed cool heads in front of 66,000 fans in Dusseldorf.
