Aston Villa are no more nervous about F% playing at Wembley in the League Cup Final than a man collecting his wage packet after a week of hard work. The confidence that rubbed off on them in their memorable Semi-Final victory over humiliated Manchester United has become a permanency in Villa's approach to football. In fact, judged by the outward calm of Team Manager Vic Crowe — is he ever anything else but calm? — the League Cup Final could be on February 27, 1972, instead of this month. Crowe told Shoot: "We have got our priorities right, which means promotion to the Second Division is number one. "The Final at Wembley is number two. I'm not saying we don't want to win it. Nothing would thrill us more. What I am saying is that this match is a long way from our minds at this moment.

Semi Final

It wasn't the kind of shootout Brazil expected to win, but the world champions are nothing if not adaptable. Goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel made two diving saves as Brazil defeated The Netherlands 4-2 on penalty kicks Tuesday night to advance to the championship match Sunday of the World Cup. "That was God helping me," he said. Brazil, seeking an unprecedented fifth crown, will play the winner of Wednesday's game between France and Croatia. A surprisingly tame match was tied 1-1 after 120 minutes. "There were times when we were afraid and Holland were afraid also," Brazil midfielder Rivaldo admitted. "That's why the match went to penalties."

Division Two Playoffs 1988 1989 Blackburn Rovers Crystal Palace

Play-Off FinalFirst Leg
31st May 1989 Ewood Park

Crystal Palace strode triumphantly into Division One amid amazing scenes when Ian Wright scored a stunning winner three minutes from the end of time in the second leg of their promotion play-off at Selhurst Park. Wright's carefully placed header capped a magnificent performance from Steve Coppell's team as they clawed back Blackburn's two-goal advantage from the first leg. In a contest that could not be bettered as a sporting spectacle, Palace remained true to their season-long philosophy and gambled on attack. It was daring, painfully exciting, but above all successful. In the frenzied atmosphere. Palace benefited from an early break, when the prolific Wright scrambled home his first goal after Pardew's cross had caused havoc. Only the heroics of central defender Hendry kept Blackburn from disintegrating, but they stayed ahead on aggregate until just after the interval. Atkins needlessly brought down McGoldrick, anil Madden converted the penalty to set up the eventual dramatic finish.

Premier League 2011 2012 Manchester United Arsenal

28 August 2011
Old Trafford Manchester

If Arsenal were in poor shape before this fixture, the devastation at Old Trafford has left them in a chaotic state. Injuries cannot account for this mauling that included the dismissal of Carl Jenkinson, with a second yellow card, when the score was 6-2. Manchester United were pitiless, with Ashley Young lashing their eighth in stoppage time Arsenal have failed to keep pace with United for some years, but this match showed that Sir Alex Ferguson's team is almost out of view. Considering the weakness of the line-up Arsène Wenger had to select, with the centre-half Thomas Vermaelen ruled out by a thigh injury and the teenager Francis Coquelin making his debut in midfield, it was natural that the visitors should suffer. Even so, nobody envisaged such humiliation.

Probably the most high profile game between City and West Bromwich Albion was our first ever League Cup Final win back in 1970. Memorably it was played on a muddy snowy Wembley surface famously described by Blues’ manager Joe Mercer as “a pig of a pitch”. It was a long way short of the bowling green surface everyone had come to expect of England’s home stadium but it was hardly surprising given that The Horse Of The Year Show had been held at Wembley just days earlier, an unthinkable scenario in today’s world where perfection is demanded from players, sponsors and a global audience of millions.
However despite the condition and wintry weather, referee James passed the game fit to play. Fans of both teams had earlier volunteered to help clear the snow and probably saved the match from postponement.

Uefa Cup 1979 1980 Crvena Zvezda Bayern München

Third Round,
Second Leg
12 December 1979
Stadion Crvena Zvezda  Marakana Belgrad
Referee: Hilmi

TO UPDATE Focus On : Liam Brady Story

Liam Brady is a true Irish soccer great. It is a major regret for many Republic of Ireland fans that this wonderful soccer talent was never displayed in a major international championship finals. Injury, bad luck and his inability to adapt fully to the Jack Charlton football philosophy all conspired to prevent him from appearing in the finals of either the Euro Championship or World Cup. Undoubtedly Liam Brady was the most Irish talented footballer of his generation and he went on to play for top soccer clubs in England and Italy. Brady was born, and raised in the 1960's, in Dublin. As a schoolboy he played for the northside Dublin football club St Kevin's Boys and very quickly came to the attention of the Irish based scouts for English top flight clubs. While Brady was playing his schoolboy soccer in Ireland the English First Division (the fore runner of the Premier League) was being dominated by football clubs from the North of England. Clubs from London were struggling to make the big breakthrough. Nevertheless it was London club Arsenal that attracted a 13 year old Liam Brady over for soccer trials. With hindsight it seems obvious that the young Brady would impress the Arsenal staff with his footballing gifts in general and his sublime left foot. Equally the professionalism in approach and the high quality set up at Highbury impressed Brady. In 1971, at the age of 15, Brady moved across to Arsenal on a full-time basis.

Brian Clough and Peter Taylor had worked their magic again. The irascible duo had taken the small East Midlands club Nottingham Forest from the old Second Division in 1976/77 to the English league title the following year, seven points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, and had also won the League Cup. Clough had joined Forest early in 1975, with Taylor joining eighteen months later, and had transformed the squad. Already at the club were attacking right-back Viv Anderson, who was soon to become England's first black international, the tubby left-winger John Robertson, and striker Tony Woodcock. Clough brought in his two lieutenants, the industrious midfielder and captain John McGovern and centre-forward John O'Hare. who had followed him on his travels from Derby to Leeds. English international goalkeeper Peter Shilton arrived from Stoke City, and two Scottish internationals - fiery central defender Kenny Burns and crafty, hardworking inside-forward Archie Gemmill -were also persuaded to the City Ground.
