FA Cup 2010 2011 Leyton Lorient Arsenal

Demie Finale
Matchroom Stadium London
20 Fevrier 2011

No game against Barcelona is ever going to be easy and, having gone a goal down, Arsène Wenger can’t help but be happy with a 2-1 win. Now, from playing in front of a packed Emirates against one of the best teams in the world, Arsenal have to prepare themselves for a short trip across town to the Matchroom Stadium. That presents an entirely different set of potential problems - the much lauded giant-killing of the FA Cup. The enclosed stadium will ensure an intense atmosphere and the freedom of being 9/1 underdogs will ensure Leyton Orient put everything into causing an upset. The only problem with that is Arsenal have become a much tougher nut to crack this season. The win over Barcelona is a testament to their ability to scrap without abandoning their fluid passing style.

Manchester United finally got to start their third round tie with Huddersfield on 4 March. They made up for lost time by reaching Wembley just fifty-four days later, the quickest-ever run on record. Huddersfield were swept aside 5-0 with Denis Law scoring a hat-trick. A week later, Albert Quixall's goal was enough to beat Aston Villa. Five days on and United were in the quarter-finals after Quixall and Law had ensured a 2-1 win over Chelsea. Before the month was out Coventry had been seen off 3-1 with a brace from Bobby Charlton. Having wiped off the backlog. United waited the regulation four weeks before meeting this season's surprise package at Villa Park in the semi-final. Southampton have often reserved their finest Cup moments when playing outside the top division.

FA Cup 1960 1961 Tottenham Leicester

Finale

When Bill Nicholson died in 2004, there were genuine and heartfelt tributes at White Hart Lane. Tottenham are now regarded as a club starved of success since they have gone without a major trophy since 1991. A similar view prevailed in 1960-1961. A league triumph in 1951 seemed distant; Spurs had become nearly men, adept at reaching semi-finals and, occasionally, the upper reaches of the table, but never bringing home the bacon. During the 1958-1959 season Bill Nicholson was appointed as manager. A dour, almost curmudgeonly figure, Nicholson was a great talent-spotter and a great nurturer of that talent. Within three years he had built a formidable side: good enough to end the previous season on a high b: beating Wolves in their last league game and denying them the opportunity to win the Double. Spurs themselves had finished a point behind in third place. The captain and fulcrum of the team was Danny Blanchflower. Blanchflower was one of those mysterious players; not apparently blessed with amazing talent, he always seemed to take the right option, never wasting the ball and able to play the game at the pace he wanted. If Blanchflower was the head, the heart was Dave Mackay. The most uncompromising of players, he was a manager's dream; a totally committed player who could put the fear of God into opponents but could play as well. With a powerful centre forward in Bobby Smith and good wingers, Tottenham were a threat to everyone.

FA Cup 1963 1964 Preston North End West Ham United

Finale
2 Mai 1964
Wembley Stadium

The semi-final draw guaranteed that a Second Division club would again reach Wembley and it was Preston who edged home. Although McLaughlin scored for Swansea, goals from Alex Dawson and centre-half Tony Singleton saw North End through. Joining them in the final were West Ham, whose wait had been even longer. Forty-one years had passed since they went down to Bolton, but Ron Greenwood was fashioning a side that would open a new chapter at Upton Park. Marshalled by Bobby Moore and spearheaded by Geoff Hurst,  the Hammers began their journey by settling local difficulties against Charlton and Leyton Orient. Hurst scored twice against the Os, and then hit two more as Swindon were beaten at the County Ground. The quarter-finals pitted West Ham against top division opponents for the first time. Burnley's star was waning from their tide-winning season four years earlier but they remained a top-half side. Two goals from Johnny Byrne helped the Hammers home 3-2.

Wigan manager Robert Martinez “The game against Chelsea shows the kind of form Arsenal are in at the moment, said Martinez. “I’m sure they have many players who were ready to play against Chelsea and are used to playing a lot of games in a short space of time. “They know how to deal with these situations and so I don’t think it’ll have too big a say on the game. “Right now they are reaching their peak and we’ll have to be at our best to compete with that, but in a period that is full of fixtures in a short space of time we’re looking at the game as an ideal opportunity to continue our own form and put more points on the board.

After a run of 29 matches unbeaten Manchester United finally came unstuck last weekend at Wolves and will hope to bounce back against ‘noisy neighbours’ City on Saturday lunchtime and maintain their title charge. Indeed victory for the Red Devils will put them eight points ahead of their city rivals, having played a game less, and in all likelihood end Roberto Mancini’s hopes of landing the Premier League title. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted this is a “terrific” game for his side after defeat last weekend and having lost just once to Manchester City at Old Trafford since 1974, will hope that this is one run his side can maintain this weekend.

A dismal run before Christmas not only saw Chelsea  slip out of the title race but also left last season's Double winners facing the unthinkable of failing to finish in the top four altogether. But while Carlo Ancelotti's men are yet to regain their scintil Since losing 1-0 at Wolves on January 5, Chelsea have lost just once in all competitions, progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals while boosting their hopes of securing a place in next season's competition. Five wins from their last seven games put the Blues back above fifth-placed Tottenham and they trail City by two points with a game in hand.

Chelsea welcome Liverpool on Sunday with all eyes very much focused on one man, Fernando Torres. The Spaniard’s move from Anfield to Stamford Bridge has prompted much discussion and even pictures of his old Liverpool shirt being burnt on Merseyside, yet a quirk of fate means he should make his first outing in a blue shirt against the men in red.The gloom surrounding Torres’ departure did not last long at Anfield, no doubt helped by the arrivals of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. Suarez then introduced himself to his new fans with a goal in the midweek win over Stoke City to ensure the Kop have a new hero.
