Liverpool, League champions and First Division leaders, were within a minute of an inglorious FA Cup exit. Blackburn Rovers, 19th in the Second Division, were leading 1-0 when the ball squirted out of play on the left flank of their defence. An obliging ball-girl returned the ball to Steve Nicol, who threw it to Ray Houghton. His cross went over Gary Gillespie, who was baulked by a defender, and flew agonisingly off the foot of Blackburn right-back Mark Atkins into his own goal.
Such was the thin line between celebration and despair for Rovers. They scarcely had time to kick off before the final whistle went, condemning them to an unappetising replay at Anfield - and inevitable defeat. It was a Cup-tie which bristled with incident. Ronnie Rosenthal missed two early chances for Liverpool; Simon Garner scored early in the second half for Blackburn. Kevin Moran of Blackburn and Glenn Hysen of Liverpool were sent off for professional fouls. Atkins apart, most of the sympathy was reserved for Blackburn manager, Don Mackay. Early the following season he was dismissed — and his replacement was the man who had escaped in the dying seconds that day eight months earlier ... Kenny Dalglish.
Blackburn Rovers: Mimms, Atkins, Duxbury, Reid, May, Moran, Gayle (sub. Johnrose), Miller, Stapleton, Garner, Sellars (sub. Shepstone). Scorer: Garner
Liverpool: Grobbelaar, Hysen, Burrows, Nicol, Staunton (sub. Molby), Gillespie, Rosenthal, Houghton, Rush, Barnes, McMahon. Scorer: Atkins (o.g.)
