Friendly 2011 USA Paraguay on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

29th march 2011:
united states of america v. paraguay

From their deployment–normally two defensive midfielders coupled with two striker-forwards up top and usually in a 4-4-2–to their game planning–defensive pressure–all the way to how they score–for the past two World Cups they have more goals scored from the striker role than the US. That number is “1.” Paraguay, 24th in the FIFA rankings to the US’s 19th. Fair to say however that the States have more offensive firepower in this one. After fortressing themselves in against Argentina in the early going Saturday, the Yanks will look to do a little TCB, Elvis-style, in his home state of Tennessee against a team that embarrassed themselves against Mexico to the tune of 3-1 in Oakland, CA over the weekend.
Despite the loss and lagging form,  Paraguay, a World Cup quarterfinalist, should provide an equitable opponent and one who USMNT coach Bob Bradley can measure some new players against after Argentina saw Bradley’s short term “A” team fully deployed. Expect some new faces in the starting line-up, a multitude of subs and…hopefully some warmer weather.

Friendly 2011 Mexico Paraguay on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

international friendly
26th march 2011: mexico v. paraguay

Mexico and Paraguay will use each other to prepare for upcoming summer tournaments, and with this match falling on an international fixture weekend the teams will field full-strength or close to it rosters. El Tricolor have already played a match against Jose Manuel De La Torre but that squad was more experimental than this one.
Five key players have returned to the squad who, for one reason or another, were unable to participate against Bosnia in February. Perhaps the most noticeable is Guillermo Ochoa, who was not included in the roster despite being healthy and available. The bar for goalkeeping has been set high as Jesus Corona performed admirably against Bosnia. As Alfredo Talavera was a favorite of De La Torre's in Toluca, Ochoa seemingly has his work cut out for him. This will also mark the first chance De La Torre will be able to field exciting youngsters Javier Hernandez, Giovani Dos Santos and Carlos Vela together. Vela, along with Efrain Juarez, was suspended for six months and unable to play against Bosnia. Whether the trio lines up together and in what formation remains to be seen.

Mexico have a limited opportunity to prepare for the Gold Cup as this will be the first of three friendlies Mexico have lined up before June 5. Further placing importance on this game is the caliber of opponent as Paraguay are stronger than Tuesday's opponent - Venezuela - as well as their final pre-Gold Cup rival, Ecuador.
Getting a result is not necessarily imperative but playing well and performing well are. The team has had precious few moments to prepare under De La Torre and try and grab a grasp of his tactics and formations. However, the continuity the team has enjoyed from last summer to now will help ease into the transition process as Mexico look to defend their Gold Cup title.

Paraguay are also preparing for this summer as los guaranis are looking for success in Copa America. Paraguay crashed out badly in their last Copa America appearance, losing to Mexico by a whopping 6-0. Since then, though, Paraguay have done well for themselves, having won their World Cup group last summer and reaching the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champions Spain. Paraguay will be without venerable veterans Nelson Haedo Valdez and Roque Santa Cruz as manager Gerardo Martino elected to leave the pair with their respective clubs. The attack, then, will likely go through Dortmund's Lucas Barrios. Still, without Santa Cruz and Valdez, El Tri's backline may not have a tough time bottling up Paraguay's shorthanded attack. The squad will feature several players familiar to Mexican supporters: Edgar Benitez, Osvaldo Martinez and Dario Veron play in Mexico, with Pachuca, Monterrey and Pumas, respectively. Also, Paraguay's roster features former Mexican league talents such as Cristian Riveros, Enrique Vera and Paulo Da Silva.

Campionato 2010 2011 Lazio Cesena on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

week 30
19th march 2011: lazio v. cesena

Lazio captain Tommaso Rocchi has warned his team-mates they cannot afford to dwell on their bitter defeat to Roma. The Biancoceleste lost 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico last weekend to suffer their fifth straight derby defeat. The result was all the more painful as it allowed Udinese to leapfrog Lazio into fourth in the standings and the top four teams at the end of the season qualify for the Champions League.
"We must leave behind all the negatives from that derby," Rocchi said. "It is an important season and now the crucial games begin. "We have obtained positive results this campaign and we cannot throw away all the good work we have done because we lost the derby. "We have to believe in ourselves and focus on a top four finish. "We owe it to ourselves and to our fans to battle until the end in order to achieve something important."

Lazio trail two points behind Udinese and are two points above sixth-placed Roma heading into Saturday's match at the Stadio Olimpico. "Our only focus right now is on beating Cesena and put pressure on Udinese," Rocchi said. Lazio coach Edy Reja will be forced to make some changes to his starting XI with respect to last weekend's match. Stefan Radu, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Cristian Ledesma are all suspended. Rivals Cesena cannot afford a defeat in Rome if they are to remain above the drop zone. Last weekend's 2-2 draw against Juventus allowed Cesena to hold the last position of safety and they are just one point clear of 18th-place Lecce. Cesena coach Massimo Ficcandeti hopes his team can keep up their recent good run of form on the road this weekend. The promoted outfit have collected four points in their last two games away from home. "We are on the right path," said Ficcandeti. "We must keep up our good work and remain focused."

Uefa Cup 1982 1983 Ipswich Town As Roma

First Round, Second Leg
Portman Road
Wednesday, September 29, 1982

Attendance: 17751
Referee: Mr V Christov

In the face of their mountainous UEFA Cup first round second leg task gallant Ipswich Town gave the sort of spirited show that would have done justice to the legendary Sherpa Tensing himself. The East Anglians excited the home fans with an effort full of all the spirit and determination they could muster and in the 54th minute that summit of a possible place in the second round came into clear view when Steve McCall put them two goals ahead.

The Italians were rocked but just when it looked as though the "Roman Empire" was about to fall about their ears Aldo Maldera rifled in from just outside the penalty box with what was their first real on target effort. Ipswich, who had been given the lead in the 41st minute by the transfer seeking Gates, were then faced with the prospect of having to score three times to win the tie as away goals count double in Europe. Terry Butcher, playing up front as Town threw caution to the wind, pulled back another with a header in the 71st minute, but the Italians held on to go into the draw for the second round in Zurich tomorrow. So for the second season in succession Ipswich go out of the competition they won in 1981 at the first hurdle. And what is even more galling for them is that this time they do so sadly rueing two defensive errors from
the first leg in Rome which they lost 3-0.

Primera Division 2010 2011 Athletic Bilbao Villarreal

week 29 20th march:
Villarreal defender Jose Manuel Catala believes today’s clash with Athletic Bilbao will have an impact on the race for Champions League football. The Yellow Submarine are currently three points behind third-placed Valencia despite a poor run of form that has seen them win just one of their last seven outings, but they do hold an eight-point lead over fifth-placed Espanyol.

Athletic are a further point behind, and Catala believes a win for Villarreal today would eliminate their hosts from the race for third. He said: “We have a good cushion of points, but we are going to San Mames with all the desire in the world. “It's not a decisive game, but if we beat them you could say we would discard a direct rival.” While Villarreal head into this game on the back of a Europa League victory over Bayer Leverkusen, their last domestic outing ended in a disappointing draw with Sporting Gijon. Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, were held to a 2-2 draw by Getafe last time out.

Primera Division 2010 2011 Valencia Sevilla on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

20th march 2011:
valencia v. sevilla

Valencia sit in third place. Second place looks out of reach for them, as they trail Real Madrid by 16 points. Depending on this result and others, they could be leapfrogged by Villarreal which would leave them in fourth place. Los Che have won two of their last five games, losing two and drawing one. They also found themselves dumped out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, courtesy of German side Schalke. Valencia have won 10 of their last 12 league meetings with Sevilla.

Sevilla are currently in eighth place in La Liga after enduring a disappointing campaign so far. This weekend could see them move up to sixth, but they cannot drop any further. Los Nervionenses have also won only two of their last five games, picking up two draws, including last weekends 1-1 draw with league leaders Barcelona, and one loss. Before Jesus Navas' goal against Barcelona, the last time a Spanish player that wasn't Alvaro Negredo found the net for Sevilla was against Valencia. Goalkeeper Andres Palop has returned to full training for Sevilla after a long injury lay-off, though it is widely expected that Javi Varas will start between the sticks in this game. January signing Gary Medel is a doubt for the match, as he was allowed to return to his native Chile during the week.

Campionato 2010 2011 Inter Lecce on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

week 30
20th march 2011:
internazionale milano v. lecce

The Nerazzurri head into tomorrow's match against Lecce in buoyant mood after advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals this week. Inter won 3-2 at Bayern Munich to progress on away goals and set up a meeting with Schalke 04 next month. "It's going to be a difficult game against Schalke," said Inter striker Goran Pandev, who scored the winner against Bayern on Tuesday.

"You have to be a strong team to reach the last eight of the competition.
"We expect a difficult tie but we will do all we can to defend our European title."
Leonardo's men, who have also made it through to the Coppa Italia semi-finals, must now turn their attention back to the domestic competition.
Inter go into tomorrow's match in second place, trailing five points behind Serie A leaders AC Milan after last weekend's 1-1 draw at Brescia although that could be greater come the game given their city rivals play today.
"We have to concentrate in the league," said Pandev. "Because from now on, every game will be a final."
In the last meeting, on 10 november, an injury-ravaged Inter side took a 76th minute lead thanks to a goal by Diego Milito but the champions were unable to fend off a spirited rally by Lecce who equalised through Ruben Olivera's header 10 minutes from time.

P.L. 2010 2011 Tottenham West Ham on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

2010/11 week 30
19th march 2011:
tottenham hotspur v. west ham united

The game could have huge ramifications for both clubs, with three points very much a must for each side.

Harry Redknapp faces his former club, looking for his current side Spurs to go level with fourth placed Chelsea.
West Ham are currently sitting third from bottom in the Premier League, so points are obviously in desperate need for the Hammers. But history is not on West Ham's side as they have not won at White Hart Lane since 1999. Should West Ham seal victory, they could in theory move as high as 12th with a win - which shows just how close the bottom of the Premier League is.
Tottenham are almost certain to welcome back Gareth Bale to their starting line-up. The Welsh ace has not started a game since the end of January but he is now fit again and should face West Ham. Redknapp will wait until Saturday morning before deciding on William Gallas, who picked up a hamstring injury earlier in the week. Jermain Defoe will also be hoping for a recall to face his former club. West Ham welcome back Gary O'Neil into the their squad as he was cup-tied for their match with Stoke last week.

P.L. 2010 2011 West Bromwich Arsenal on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

2010/11 week 30
19th march 2011:
west bromwich albion v. arsenal

Despite a galling few weeks for Arsene Wenger's men, the Gunners still sit just three points off league leaders United, with the added benefit of a game in hand. The Baggies snapped a sorry six-game winless streak before the FA Cup break, beating Birmingham 3-1 to jump clear of the drop zone, albeit by a single point. Neutrals, if not Arsene Wenger, will hope for a repeat of the reverse fixture at the Emirates in September, as the Baggies, then managed by Roberto Di Matteo, held off a late surge to win 3-2. All eyes will be on the Arsenal  bench and the likely return of goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who has rejoined the Gunners on a short-term deal to cover their injury crisis between the sticks.Wenger will have to do without Johan Djourou in central defence, with the Swiss international picking up a painful shoulder dislocation during the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester United.
The Arsenal boss has also ruled out a trio of key players for the game on Saturday, with Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Alex Song all still unable to return to the fray.

Campionato 2010 2011 Chievo Inter Milan on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

Week 13
21st november 2010:
chievo verona v. internazionale milano

To term Inter’s current malevolent form as ‘crisis’ would perhaps be overstating their wretched run of results, but the Italian and European champions have been severely struggling for quite some time. Last weekend’s defeat to Milan in the Derby della Madonnina pushed the Beneamata to six points off the pace with 20 points from 12 matches. Club supremo Massimo Moratti has publicly backed coach Rafael Benitez and insists that he has no plans of sacking the Spaniard. However, pressure is increasing on the former Liverpool manager, whose tactics and ability to manage his players have come under scrutiny. Injuries to key players especially to defenders Walter Samuel and Maicon have had an adverse impact on their game but that can be no excuse for Benitez. Inter have won just one of their last six competitive matches but they will need to garner a win on Sunday to keep themselves in the title race.

uefa europa league 2010/11
round of 16 second leg
17th march 2011:
rangers v. psv eindhoven

Having secured a creditable 0-0 draw from the first leg of their round of 16 clash in Holland last week, Walter Smith's men now find the onus is on them to attack in front of their own fans.
It is the first time in four years that the Light Blues will run out at Ibrox for the deciding leg of a continental encounter and Smith accepts he will have to adapt his tactics for the encounter.

The Gers boss has preferred to employ a 5-4-1 formation in Europe this term, which helped them reach this stage of the tournament with an away goals triumph over Sporting Lisbon in the last round.
But it is Fred Rutten's PSV who go into the tie knowing that a scoring draw will be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals following the stalemate at the Philips Stadion.

The Eredivisie outfit have a dismal record against Scottish sides in Europe, with no wins from seven fixtures, and have failed to triumph in their five previous matches against Rangers.

Primera División de España 1982 1983 Atletic Bilbao Espanol Barcelona

In 1981 the club appointed Javier Clemente  as manager. He soon set about putting together one of the most successful Athletic Bilbao teams in the clubs history. Young players from the cantera such as Santiago Urkiaga, Miguel De Andres, Ismael Urtubi, Estanislao Argote and Andoni Zubizarreta joined veterans Dani and Goikoetxea.

In his first season in charge, Clemente led the team to 4th place in La Liga. In 1983 the club won La Liga and in 1984 they won a La Liga Copa del Rey double. In 1985 and 1986 Athletic finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Clemente’s Athletic acquired notoriety for its aggressive style of play, personified by hard man Goikoetxea. He favoured two defensive midfielders playing in front of twin centre backs and a sweeper and as a result critics regarded his teams as dour but effective.
Athletic Bilbao has failed to win a major trophy since the success of the Clemente era. A succession of coaches including José Ángel Iribar, Howard Kendall, Jupp Heynckes and Javier Irureta and even a returning Clemente failed to reproduce his success.

Group 1 contained both East and West Germany, and they both progressed at the expense of Chile and Australia. But the clash between the two Germanies caused a sensation, as the poor relations from the east pulled off a 1-0 win. The embarrassing result caused panic in the West German camp, despite the fact that they were safely through to the quarter-finals. Team captain Franz Beckenbauer held a crisis meeting with his team-mates, and appeared on television to try to explain what had happened to a shocked West German public.

During the team's 38-year existence, East Germany qualified for just one World Cup: the 1974 tournament in West Germany. As it turned out, the draw for the first group stage of the tournament actually pitted them against West Germany, too, setting up the only significant meeting between the sides in history. After a solid first two games, both teams had already qualified for the second group stage, but this meeting in Hamburg was about much more than sporting success. The West Germans, winners of the 1972 European Championship, were said to have dismissed the East's chances ahead of the match, but they proved tough to break down and, in a match low on quality with a slew of missed chances, Jurgen Sparwasser's 77th-minute strike made the difference. The goal was used for political purposes for years afterwards, but Sparwasser denied suggestions he had been financially rewarded for his efforts and, feeling the strain of continued state exploitation, fled to West Germany shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. "For us, it was just a game," he said in a 2006 interview. "Nothing political.

uefa champions league 2010/11
round of 16 second leg
15th march 2011:
bayern münchen v. internazionale milano

Bayern come into the second leg on home soil with a priceless 1-0 away win from the Giuseppe Meazza courtesy of Mario Gomez's late strike. However, Bayern are sure to still be smarting from last season's 2-0 final defeat to Inter at Santiago Bernabeu and the German outfit are unlikely to be happy unless they finish the job on Tuesday.

Inter must become only the second team in Champions League history to recover from a home defeat with an away win in the second leg if they are to maintain their interest in the competition. Inter are likely to be without Argentine striker Diego Milito, who also missed the first leg with a hamstring injury and defender Lucio is also doubtful. "We will have to look at Lucio's fitness in training later this evening. Not only Lucio's fitness but that of some other players as well," explained manager Leonardo.

On the last confrontation, Bayern goalkeeper Thomas Kraft stood tall and proud between the sticks until the Bavarians were able to capitalise on one of their many chances late in the game. Arjen Robben's low drive was spilled by Inter shot-stopper Julio Cesar and Mario Gomez was on hand to pounce on the rebound in injury time, giving the Germans a one-goal advantage heading into to the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

Atletico are eighth in the Spanish Primera Division, 12 points behind Villarreal in the final Champions League spot, following some mixed form so far this season. But Perea has not given up hope of catching the Yellow Submarine over the final 11 rounds of fixtures, starting with today’s trip to Almeria. He said: “I still think it would be a failure if we didn't qualify for the Champions League.

“While there is still a chance mathematically, we will keep believing. If we do our job then I'm sure others will drop back.” While Atletico Madrid do head to Juegos Mediterraneos on the back of a big 3-1 victory over Villarreal, second-from-bottom Almeria recorded a huge 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Hercules last time out. On the last meeting in October, a Sergio Aguero tap-in was cancelled out just before half-time by a long range Piatti strike, with no goals in the second half...

Europa League 2010 2011 Bayer Leverkusen Villarreal on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

uefa europa league 2010/11
round of 16 first leg
10th march 2011:
bayer leverkusen v. villarreal

The Bundesliga side welcome Villarreal to the BayArena as the competition "really gets going", according to Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes, and Hyypia is particularly motivated to take Leverkusen into the last eight. "There are only big clubs left in the competition now and these games are really exciting," "I have played many games like this in my career and I hope that many more are to come.

Hanno Balitsch, Eren Derdiyok, Renato Augusto and Simon Rolfes are also back for a practically full-strength Leverkusen, although Michael Ballack is still training individually and us unlikely to figure.
Villarreal go into the match in disappointing domestic form but playmaker Santi Cazorla has warned Leverkusen that his side, on their day, can beat any team. The Yellow Submarine had been enjoying a fine campaign up until about a month ago, when things started to go wrong for Juan Carlos Garrido's men in La Liga. In their last six Primera Divison matches, Villarreal have recorded just one win and suffered three defeats - the latest being Saturday's 3-1 loss to Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon. That defeat saw fourth-placed Villarreal slip four points behind Valencia in the race for third spot, although they still boast a healthy nine-point advantage over Athletic Bilbao in fifth.

uefa europa league 2010/11
round of 16 first leg
10th march 2011:

Zenit will be missing two key players in the form of Vladimir Bystrov and Sergei Semak. Luciano Spalletti's side are currently only competing in the Europa League, after lifting the Russian Premier League trophy in November, but Twente are still involved in domestic action as the Eredivisie is in full flow.
Twente joined the party late in this season's Europa League, after being

eliminated from the Champions League group stages, finishing third in what was arguably one of the strongest groups in the competition. This will be the first competitive meeting ever contested between these two sides.

Primera Division 2010 2011 Athletic Bilbao Sevilla on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

week 276th march 2011:
athletic bilbao v. sevilla

Athletic have lost their last three fixtures by a scoreline of 2-1, preceeded by a 1-0 loss to Mallorca. Curiously, three of Athletic's four home defeats this season also ended 2-1. In the last seven years, Sevilla have won five matches at San Mames, more times than any other visiting team to the Basque side. Alvaro Negredo has scored three goals in Sevilla's last three away matches.
