Primera Division 2010 2011 Valencia Real Madrid

23rd april 2011: valencia vs real madrid

It has been an amazing few days for Madridistas. After a humiliating 5-0 loss at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid have bounced back. After a hard fought draw in the second Clasico at Santiago Bernabeu, Los Galacticos finally ended their trophy drought by beating FC Barcelona 1-0 courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo (Yes, he does have the ability to score against Barcelona apparently) in a tense and thrilling battle, in which each half was dominated by one another. Jorge Valdano called it a heroic accomplishment, while Perez noted that they showed the world who is on top. Real Madrid celebrated the victory with 150000 fans at the Cibeles; the party continued till dawn, as We are the Champions boomed from the loud speakers amid plenty of fireworks.

The focus now shifts to the next set of Clasicos, obviously the most important ones of the season; but before that, Real Madrid need to make the trip again to Mestalla to take on Valencia for a very crucial match. Real Madrid’s confidence will be high after winning the Copa Del Rey in eighteen years, and they would love to continue their momentum by beating the third best team in the Liga. Roberto Soldado has confirmed that his team would give  the guard of honor for the newly-crowned Copa del Rey winners at the Mestalla. Valencia has been in fine form, having won their last three matches, including an unbelievable 5-0 thrashing of Villarreal. Unai Emery has been a fine manager, leading his players and coping extremely well with the departure of the two Davids-Villa and Silva. Valencia are six points ahead of Villarreal, and would like to keep the same distance with only six games to go for the season. If Valencia manage to win five more times, it would give them their highest point tally ever in the La Liga – the previous being 77 points accumulated under Rafa Benitez, on their way to La Liga glory in 2002-03.

English Leagues the 60s: Liverpool Arsenal Division One 1964 1965

First Ever Match of The Day
22 August 1964
Anfield Road

Kenneth Wolstenholme's words were mildly prophetie: 'Welcome to Match ofthe Day, the first of a weekly series on BBC 2. This afternoon we are in Beatleville...' It wasn't only John, Paul, George and Ringo who were putting Merseyside on the map. The Kop at Anfield, witry and refreshing, were signalling the arrivai of a new force in the English game Bill Shankly's Liverpool. The champions opened their programme against Billy Wright's Arsenal, and if the game was memorable for the BBC, it certainly wasn't for Don Howe, the England full-back making his Arsenal debut. Howe was up against Peter Thompson, Liverpool's flying left-winger, who helped set up the opening goals for Roger Hunt with a splendid volley, and Gordon Wallace, deputising for the injured lan St john. But Arsenal retaliated. Geoff Strong, who ironically joined Liverpool soon afterwards, pulled a goal back, and then Joe Baker headed the equaliser. Every new production needs a fitting climax, and the armchair viewers got one when Wallace struck the winner three minutes from time. In the second half, a black cat delayed the taking of a corner by running across the Liverpool goalmouth. The BBC had got lucky with their first Match ofthe Day.

Football Funnies

Primera Division 1988 1989 "El Clasico" Barcelona Real Madrid

European Cup 1974 1975 Bayern München As St Etienne Both Legs

Semi Finals
First and
Second Leg
April 1975

Fa Cup 2010 2011 Bolton Stoke City on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

semifinals
17th april 2011:
bolton wanderers v. stoke city

Bolton Wanderers face Stoke City  on Sunday, April 17, 2011 in the semi-final of the FA Cup. And by the time the teams walk out onto the Wembley turf they will already know who they will face, as the other semi-final between Manchester City and Manchester United takes place the day before.
Owen Coyle’s Bolton Wanderers come into this match on a mixed run of form. Their fine 3-0 win over West Ham United on Saturday was preceded by two league defeats to Manchester United and Birmingham City. Before that their league run had seen them draw away to Newcastle United and beat Everton at home. They are lying eighth in the Premiership, but a full 10 points behind Tottenham Hotspur who hold the vital Europa League place.
Stoke City is only five points behind Bolton, but more crucially is only six points above the relegation zone and cannot therefore relax just yet, though manager Tony Pulis is probably feeling quietly confident that they will avoid the drop. Recent form has been mixed with their last three Premiership games seeing a win over Newcastle United, an impressive draw against Chelsea and a defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Bolton Wanderers had to battle hard in the quarter finals to secure their place in the semis. They were drawn away at Birmingham City and won the ding-dong match 3-2. Johan Elmander gave them the lead after 20 minutes but Cameron Jerome equalised for Birmingham City shortly afterwards. Bolton again took the lead at 60 minutes through Kevin Davies from the penalty spot. But Birmingham still had fire and equalised again with just 10 minutes to go through Kevin Phillips. It was down to South Korean international Chung-Yong Lee to head the winner in the last minute. The Wanderers had a 2-0 home win over non-league York City to begin their campaign before being held at home to a goalless draw against local rivals Wigan Atheltic. It took a 66th minute winner by Ivan Klasnic in the replay to get them into the fifth round, where they had to travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. An early goal by Ivan Klasnic secured the 1-0 win.

Stoke City had a tough 2-1 win over Premiership strugglers West Ham United in the quarter finals. Defender Robert Huth put them in the lead early in the game before Frederic Piquionne equalised shortly afterwards. It took a goal by another defender – Danny Higginbotham – on the hour mark to secure the victory. City started their Cup run nervously with a 1-1 home draw against Championship side Cardiff City before winning the replay 2-0 after extra time. This set up a local derby away at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which they won 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Huth. The fifth round saw them win comfortably 3-0 against Brighton & Hove Albion.

"El Clasico" 2011 Previews: GolTv CR7 v. Messi on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

el clásico previews
15th april 2011:
cr-7 v. messi

The two greatest players in world football go head to head today in round one of their four upcoming battles! The adiZero magician and the Mercurial master will face off in a true test of their big-game abilities as Barcelona and Real Madrid battle for supremacy in four matches across three tournaments.
Lionel Messi has been involved in more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo in the top five European leagues this season. Both have surpassed everyone this season in terms of goal involvement. Having scored one more goal than Ronaldo, Messi has also been far more creative with 17 assists, more than twice as many as the Portuguese international.
Ronaldo has had more shots than any other player (212) but he has been less clinical in his finishing than Messi who converts one in every four attempts. Messi also attempts more passes (over 30 more than Ronaldo per game)

In the first 'El Clasico' of the season back in November, Barcelona put in the ultimate clinical performance. The game will be remembered as one of the most clinical and complete performances from Barcelona. The quality of the team performance made Madrid look distinctly average - a feeling Ronaldo isn't used to. Even if Ronaldo can maintain his impressive amount of shots per game, the Real Madrid goal-machine will be up against one of the most challenging keepers in football. Victor Valdés has saved 81% of shots he has faced this season in the Spanish top flight. The Spanish shot stopper has only conceded 14 goals this season in La LIga. Another stat that Ronaldo will be well aware of heading into El Clasico is that the Portuguese international has never scored or assisted a goal when playing against Lionel Messi at club level. Incredibly, Ronaldo has a poor record against the No.1 player in the world that stretches back to his early days at Manchester United.

World Cup 1982 Qualifier Norway England

World Cup 82
Qualifying Group 4 9th September 1981
Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo

Referee Kacprzak
Attendance 28,500

'Lord Nelson! Lord Beaverbrook! Sir Winston Churchill! Sir Anthony Eden! Clement Attlee! Henry Cooper! Lady Diana! Maggie Thatcher - can you hear me, Maggie Thatcher! Your boys took one hell of a beating! Your boys took one hell of a beating!' (Bjorge Lillelien on Norwegian TV)

Ron Greenwood's England team had gone to Oslo bouyed by an excellent 3-1 away win against Hungary, the eventual group winners in the previous game. The Norwegian side at that time were much like their Eurovision Song Contest participants. Not quite 'nil points' but nevertheless, this was expected to be easy pickings for the highly rated English. Greenwood had made three changes to his side, with a young Glenn Hoddle replacing the injured Trevor Brooking, Trevor Francis in for Steve Coppell and Russell Osman preferred at the back instead of Dave Watson. A packed & noisy home stadium witnessed the start that most expected, with England dominant and pressing for an early lead. On 14 minutes, their possession was rewarded with a goal by Bryan Robson, who bundled in from close range after a flick on by Kevin Keegan.

All was going to plan, the crowd was quietened, and England started to control the game, but never really threatening to overrun the Norwegians. England perhaps took it a little too easy, expectant of the cushion of a second goal. This allowed Norway to build in confidence, and when the equaliser came in the 34th minute, it was not against the run of play.
A corner from Tom Lund was blocked, with the ball returning to him for a second bite at the cherry. This time the cross was deflected past the England 'keeper Clemence, seemingly by Roger Albertsen (he would later admit not touching the ball). The equaliser immediately set the crowd buzzing, and visibly lifted the home side. Within 5 minutes the crowd would be in rapture. An attempted cross by Arne LarsenØkland was not dealt with by Terry McDermott, and his mistake allowed Hallvar Thoresen to pounce and guide the ball past the outstretched Clemence. In a state of shock, England headed for the dressing room 2-1 down at half time.

England started the second half much as they had done the first, and a leveller seemed to be on the cards. Peter Barnes replaced Hoddle, and started to cause problems and swing in a few crosses. The chances created though were not clear cut, and England were lucky not to go further behind when Clemence made an excellent 1 on 1 save from Pål Jacobsen. One clear chance fell to Trevor Francis, whose guided header from a Barnes dead ball went agonisingly close. In a desperate attempt to salvage something from the game, Greenwood introduced Withe for Mariner on 75 minutes, but the Norwegians were now defending like Trojans and the chances never came.
A defeated England trudged off the Oslo pitch knowing that qualification for Spain would now be a lot more difficult, in fact it was only Romania's failure to win any of their last 3 games that allowed them to qualify in second spot. The celebrations of the joyous home crowd at the final whistle were only equalled by those of a certain Mr Lillelien who must, surely, have left the stadium with the men in white coats that evening. Uefa Cup 1979 1980 Borussia Mönchengladbach Eintracht Frankfurt

Finals,
First and Second Leg
May 1980

Quarter Final
June 14th 1970

Referee Norberto Angel Coerezza
Jose Ortiz de Mendibil
Guillermo Velasquez (Colombia)
Attendance 23,357

England played the better football in the first period and scored rwice chrough Alan Mullery and Martin Perers. The Germans looked down and out at rhis stage. But in the 57th minute substitut? Grabowski appeared on the scene and turned the match around.

Urged on by their fans in che 30,000 capacity crowd, Franz Beckenbauer scored with what looked to be a rather weak long-distance effort, the ball somehow fînding its way past a groping Bonetti, Left back Terry Cooper was struggling as Grabowski's pace began to cause probiems. Uwe Seeler, beating the offside trap, rose to back-head the equaliser past the England 'keeper and take the contest info extra-time. England were then denied what looked like a perfectly valid goal by Hurst before che Germans claîmed the winnner. The ball was switched from one side of the fïeld to the other and eventually it found the unmarked Gerd Muller who smashed his shot past Bonetti from close range. England were out...

In the three   other quarter-final matches, Brazil beat Peru 4-2, Uruguay defeated the USSR 1-0 and Italy destroyed Mexico 4-1. Brazil went on to beat Uruguay 3-1 in their semi-final in Guadalajara while Italy and West Germany were involved in a seven-goal thriller in the Azteca Stadiurn. Italy, firing on all four cylinders, won 4-3, Rivera scoring the decider late on after a ding-dong contest. West Germany then defeated Uruguay 1-0 to claim third place.
The final ar Mexico Cirys .Azreca Stadium was warched by a crowd of 107,412 and proved to be a triumph for the South Americans. Although Roberto Boninsegna equalised Peles goal Brazil took tne rrophy in style with further strikcs from Gerson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto. Having won the trophy for the third time the Brazilians were allowed to keep it permanently, although the original was later stolen and has never been recovered. It is believed to have been melted down and the gold sold off.

Primera Division 2010 2011 Getafe Valencia on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

2nd april 2011:  getafe v. valencia

Only five points above the relegation line, Getafe receives Valencia this Saturday in great need of a victory to secure their future in the Primera Division.

Unai Emery's Ches are forced to bag the three points to keep Villarreal behind in the fight for the third place. The hosts need to gain some momentum for the final part of the tournament. They must still visit Mallorca and Bilbao, and host Sevilla, Real Madrid and Villarreal at the Coliseum. Los Ches must secure the three points to show the elimination from the Champions League has not had a major impact on the spirit of the team. Valencia's coach will have to do without Raul Albelda, Joaquin Sanchez, David Navarro and Vicente Guaita, all of them ruled out due to injuries. Roberto Soldado returns to the starting squad, just like Ever Banega and Juan Mata, who played a main role in their respective international friendly matches. Getafe's coach misses Adrian Colunga, Juan Angel Albín and Derek Boateng. Michel's Azulones have not been able to celebrate a single victory so far in 2011, will they have what it takes to stop Valencia from claiming the three points?
