La NASL értait composée de huit équipes en 1972, quinze en 1974, vingt l'année suivante. En 1978, la situation était stabilisée : vingt-quatre clubs, comme aujourd'hui. Lorsqu'on regarde la répartition géographique de ces équipes : on trouve trois équipes canadiennes (Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton), six équipes de la Côte Ouest (Seattle, Portland, San José, Los Angeles, Anaheim et San Diego), six équipes du « Centre » (Minnesota, Chicago, Tulsa, Dallas, Memphis, Houston), et enfin neuf équipes de « l'Est » (New England Tea Men, New York, Rochester, Détroit, Philadelphie, Washington, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Fort Lauderdale).

 Il y a encore quelques mois, lorsqu'on interrogeait Gerd Muller sur l'éventualité de terminer sa carrière de la même manière que Franz Beckenbauer, il faisait toujours la même réponse : « Je veux terminer ma vie active de joueur au Bayern. Je crois finalement qu'une expérience aux USA ne m'apportera rien de plus. Lorsque viendra le temps de raccrocher j'aurai déjà largement de quoi m'occuper avec mes différentes affaires commerciales. »Pourtant le dénouement de cette histoire mouvementée fut toute autre. L'homme qui participa à 472 matches de Bundesliga pour le compte du Bayern et qui marqua 365 buts était devenu petit à petit une « roue de secours » pour son équipe. Alourdi, il avait de plus en plus de difficultés à trouver le chemin des buts. Lorant, Pex-entraîneur du Bayern, avait permis à Gerd de surmonter une partie de ce handicap. Malheureusement pour lui, c'est au moment où les choses allaient s'améliorant que le Bayern « choisit » de s'écrouler devant Dusseldorf (7-1). Lorant dût faire ses valises. Son assistant, Csernai, retira Muller de l'équipe dès le match suivant. Gerd jeta l'éponge et commença à remettre en cause son contrat qui ne devait prendre fin qu'en fin de saison.

Trois fois, les soixante-quinze mille spectateurs du Giants Stadium ont répété avec Pelé ce mot qu'il venait de les exhorter à ne jamais oublier : « Je suis très heureux d'être là aujourd'hui, avec vous, pour ce grand moment de ma vie. Et j'aimerais profiter de cette occasion pour vous demander d'être attentifs à tous les enfants du monde. Nous en avons trop besoin. Tout passe, dans la vie. Pas l'amour. C'est la chose la plus importante du monde. Alors, vous allez crier avec moi...». Maintenant, Pelé pleure. On le voit sur tous les écrans de télévision du stade. En gros plan. Dans les bras de son ami de l'équipe du Brésil, Carlos Alberto, venu le rejoindre au New-York Cosmos l'année dernière. Dans ceux de Franz Beckenbauer, un coéquipier de fraîche date, pourtant. Et puis, dans ceux de Mohamed Ali, invité d'honneur avec Jeff Carter (le fils du président) de ce match historique.

 It was a game of improbables, of goals that should have been but were not, of goals that should not have been but were. It was dumb, exciting, ridiculous, laughable, thrilling, absurd—all of those things and more. What it came to finally, down there on the steamy, slick floor of the Orange Bowl in Miami last Sunday, was an ending worthy of your local kick-the-can tournament, with 22-year-old Tony Douglas of the Los Angeles Aztecs lining the ball past Goalie Osvaldo Toriani of the Miami Toros to make the score 4-3, or maybe 8-6, depending on how you want to count it, and giving his team the North American Soccer League championship.The game had a little something for everybody, everybody meaning the 15,507 in the stadium plus a coast-to-coast television audience. There were goals scored on headers, goals that ricocheted off defenders, goals that came when the goalie was nowhere in the area and goals that came on penalty kicks. Mostly goals that came on penalty kicks.

Pele’s debut for the Cosmos on the 10th of June 1975 was seen by millions of sports fans around the world, with a last minute panic from the grounds man that  his pitch didn’t look too green so he spray painted the pitch to give a grass  effect.

 In 1979, the NASL landed a contract with ABC that called for 9 telecasts of league games, including the playoffs and Soccer Bowl. Below is a list of the games that ABC carried that year, with play-by-play announcer Jim McKay and color analyst Paul Gardner. The ratings were far below what ABC expected out of the “Sport of the 80’s,” and they bailed out of the contract after carrying several games in 1980. 

  The league comprised 24 teams. The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the finals on August 27 to win the championship.

Throughout his long and storied career, Pelé had been a champion; whether with Santos of Brazil or the Brazilian National Team, he had always hoisted the winners’ cup. In his one and a half seasons with the New York Cosmos, however, he had not come close to a championship. As the 1977 season approached, all eyes were on the Brazilian to see if, in the final year of his contract and his career, he could weave his patented magic one last time.For all of Warner Brothers’ dollars, the Cosmos were a pretty mediocre club. As a result, the rest of the league had not yet taken to spending outrageous sums of money on fading stars in an attempt to imitate New York. Which is not to say that NASL owners were above copying successful formulas-in the wake of Toronto’s improbable 1976 championship, about a dozen new Yugoslavs dotted league rosters, including Vito Dimitrijevic and Yadranko Topic (New York) and Canadian National League sensation Milovan Bakic (Rochester).

$1.4 Million to Go Dutch with Johan Cruyff...

Johan Cruyff signed with the Aztecs for a reported $1.4 million over two years after turning down, so it was said, a $5 million offer from the New York Cosmos. "I wanted to try to build up soccer where it wasn't popular," he explains. "Besides, the weather is warmer in L.A." Because the Cosmos owned the rights to Cruyff, they demanded $600,000 to let the Aztecs sign him. Johan admits he has lost money on investments in Europe, but says it was love of the game that brought him back. He also plans to start a string of soccer camps in the U.S.

Parrainé par Fuji Xerox, les équipes étrangères ont été invitées à jouer des matches contre l'équipe nationale du Japon, ou une sélection d'étoiles des clubs japonais (y compris les joueurs étrangers). Certains matchs on aussi servi de collectes de fonds pour l'UNICEF (en 1987 notamment et 1988). L'événement a été abandonnée en 1990, mais en 1994, la Super Coupe de Xerox a été instituée, sous la forme d'un match entre les champions de la J-League de la saison précédente et les vainqueurs de la Coupe de l'Empereur. Il se joue comme un lever de rideau de la saison J-League, semblable à l'anglais FA Charity Shield.

Les Américains n'aiment décidément pas les miniatures. A Washington, pour cette finale du championnat professionnel nord-américain 1980 (le « Soccer Bowl »), on se serait cru au Championnat du Monde, avec 391 reporters et 140 photographes. La retransmission télévisée était assurée dans quatorze pays (ainsi que sur tout le territoire des États-Unis en direct). Un dimanche ensoleillé, sur la pelouse du stade Kennedy, à Washington, le New York Cosmos et Fort Lauderdale Strikers s'affrontaient pour remporter le treizième titre de champion de la League nord-américaine. Cinquante mille personnes étaient présentes. Quelques petites surprises au moment du coup d'envoi puisque Carlos Alberto était sur le banc des remplaçants du Cosmos, Neeskens n'étant même pas prévu sur la feuille de match. Marino, pour les Strikers, suivit le match des tribunes.
