Before the final, Herrera spoke confidently of his teams chances: ‘We are now more conscious of our strength. Last year we were not so sure of ourselves. Now, with so much in our favour we know we can win well and win attractively. We hope to lead Europe for many many years.’ With eight of the side that had so brilliantly defeated the great Real Madrid just three years earlier still in their line-up, however, Benfica had enough experience to know that they had every chance of spoiling the San Siro party.

With over 25 European countries watching on Eurovision, 'total football' met catenaccio in the Rotterdam stadium, home to Ajax's bitter rival, Feyenoord. As the game began, it was clear from the lone figure of Roberto Boninsegna in attack that Inter were hère to defend. However, it soon became apparent that even the most stubborn and cynical defence in Europe was unable to cope with Ajax's precise, flowing football. Ajax had won the Dutch league and cup, and were intent on gaining an historie treble.

Inter Milan will continue their Champions League defence as they host Schalke in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night. And the holders will be in confident mood after pulling off a thrilling fightback in the last round to keep alive their hopes of becoming the first club to successfully defend the European crown in the Champions League era. Inter looked to be heading out of the competition as they trailed Bayern Munich 2-1 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate before Wesley Sneijder's 63rd-minute strike gave them hope. Then with time running out, Goran Pandev popped up in the 88th minute to make it 3-3 on aggregate and send Inter through on away goals. Under new coach Rafa Benitez, Inter had looked a shadow of the side that Jose Mourinho led to the treble last season, but since the Spaniard was replaced by Leonardo in December the Nerazzurri have got themselves back in the Serie A title race while mounting that late comeback in Munich. Inter were then given a boost by avoiding Europe's big-boys in the quarter-final draw, although their preparations for the first leg against Schalke were dealt a blow as league leaders and derby rivals AC Milan beat them 3-0 on Saturday to inflict their first league defeat in seven matches.

History records this tie as the only ever meeting of those two great managers Bob Paisley and Sir Alex Ferguson. Aberdeen boasted the talents of Miller, McLeish, Leighton and a fiery young red head called Strachan and had managed to break the Old Firm stranglehold on Scottish football.  With the away goal in the bag the Reds sat about the second leg in confidence. It took some thirty eight minutes though before the Reds opened up their account thanks to a Willie Miller own goal. Phil Neal swept one home before half time as well and the tie was all but over. Dalglish and Hansen completed a 4-0 rout which meant the Reds had won far more easily than they had planned when the draw had been made.

Southampton, the Second Division underdogs, beat Manchester United, who finished the season third in the First Division, with an eighty‑third minute goal by outside‑left Bobby Stokes. Manchester United started stronger, and missed several early goalscoring opportunities, with Southampton goalkeeper Ian Turner making a series of impressive saves to deny Gerry Daly and Gordon Hill. Southampton in turn began to create chances; Mick Channon was put through on goal before being denied by goalkeeper Alex Stepney. As extra time loomed, Southampton's Bobby Stokes received Jim McCalliog's pass and slotted the ball past Stepney to score a late winner and with it his side's first major trophy.

The competition was won by Manchester United, who defeated Everton 1–0 at Wembley, thus denying Everton the double on top of the European Cup Winners' Cup that Everton had already won. The final was also notable for seeing the first sending off, with Kevin Moran obtaining the unwanted distinction.

The Hammers won only thirteen of their forty‑two League games during the 1974‑5 season, while Fulham averaged exactly one point per match in the Second Division. Yet, such is the fickleness of Cup fortune that, against all the odds, two moderate sides fought their way to the Final. It was a Final abounding in personalities. Alec Stock and Ron Greenwood had already tasted Cup success at Wembley as managers and Fulham could boast two ex‑England captains in Mullery and Moore
