It couldn’t have gone much better for Emma Hayes in her first game in charge of the USWNT. Mal Swanson, along with Tierna Davidson, helped the hosts to a comfortable 4-0 win over Korea Republic as both players scored braces. While it may not have been as clean a game as Hayes would’ve wanted, the shoots of the style she wants the team to play were there for all to see. In particular, the system allowed the front three of Swanson, Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman to shine, with Cat Macario sitting just behind them to be a creative force as she’s been before for the team.

What could have been if Mal Swanson had been fit for the 2023 World Cup? Since her return, Swanson has been in red hot form for both club and country, showing just how impactful she has become as a player. Against Korea Republic, it was the Mal Swanson show and she took full advantage of the system that the USWNT were using to stamp her mark on the game. Not only did Swanson grab a brace due to her movement and precise finishing, she also nabbed an assist, providing the corner kick for Tierna Davidson’s second of the game. Her ability to turn the game on it’s head and the creativity she offers from out wide, allows the USWNT to play Sophia Smith as the No. 9, the role she’s most suited to.

There will be plenty of interchange from Emma Hayes as she continues to learn about the USWNT and the players more, but for now having Swanson out wide with Smith as the No. 9 should provide her with a platform needed to make the USWNT the dominant force in the world once again. Smith and Swanson have a great understanding (as shown with the first goal) and having them fully fit and in form can only spell good things for the USWNT going forward.
