The Women’s Super League season draws to a close on Sunday with the title still up for grabs as Chelsea and Arsenal battle it out to become champions. Chelsea are top of the league on 53 points, following a double-header of victories over Tottenham Hotspur and a 1-0 road win over Birmingham City last Sunday.  Emma Hayes’ side  with just one game left to play – have the title race in their own hands with a one-point gap over Arsenal who beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night to take the race to finish top to the final weekend of the season. The Gunners travel to West Ham United on Sunday for a London derby they must win (or draw, if Chelsea lose) and hope the Blues slip up in their final game of the season at home to Manchester United.  If not Chelsea will secure their fifth WSL title.

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of a top-three finish  and with it qualification to the Champions League – are over after back-to-back defeats to Chelsea.  Spurs, on 29 points, welcome Leicester City to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday looking for a victory to secure a fifth-placed finish.  West Ham United are in sixth on 27 points and can leapfrog Spurs if they beat their north London rivals Arsenal on the final day of the season and Tottenham slip up. Manchester City won the first domestic piece of silverware of the season beating Chelsea 3-1 in early March in the final of the Women’s Continental League Cup at Cherry Red Records Stadium.  Caroline Weir’s goal ten minutes from time securing City’s victory over the title holders.  The two teams meet again in the Women’s FA Cup final on 15 May at Wembley Stadium.

Manchester United are in fourth place on 42 points, 2 points behind Manchester City who thrashed Birmingham City in the week to leapfrog their Manchester rivals into the third place and pole position for qualification to the Champions League next season.  Man Utd must beat Chelsea on Sunday and hope that Manchester City lose away to Reading in order to climb back into third spot on the final day of the campaign.

Into the FA Women’s Championship and the 2021/2022 competition is just as fierce with 12 sides in the mix for promotion to the top tier of women’s club football in England.  London City Lionesses, Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace are the teams from the capital to look out for.  The Lionesses are based at Princes Park Stadium, Dartford, while Charlton play their home matches at The Oakwood in Crayford and Crystal Palace are located at Hayes Lane, Bromley.  Liverpool finished the season as champions (on 52 points) and guaranteed promotion to the Women’s Super League.  London City Lionesses lead the way for the London teams, finishing in second place on 41 points.  Crystal Palace were fourth (on 37 points) with Charlton Athletic just one place behind them on 34 points. 

ALESSIA RUSSO

Alessia Russ penned a two-year deal with the Reds after spending three years in the US with North Carolina Tar Heels, representing the University of North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She previously had spells at Brighton and Chelsea as a youngster and while Russo was at Charlton Athletic’s Centre of Excellence, she was a mascot for her future first United manager Casey Stoney, who was captain of the Addicks at the time.

Russo’s talent was recognised early on when she was selected for England’s Under-15s. Thereafter she represented her country at every age level and was part of the squad that won bronze at the 2018 Under-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She made her senior debut in March 2020 against Spain in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, and was part of the senior Lionesses’ September 2020 training camp. In 2021, she came off the bench to score three times against Latvia, setting a record for the fastest-ever England hat-trick.

A dynamic and powerful forward with a wealth of pace, Alessia made a lightning start at United, registering three goals and two assists in her first five appearances before her 2020/21 campaign was sadly cut short by injury. She was back on the scoring trail in 2021/22, with her strikes including a Women's Super League effort in the Manchester derby against City and a memorable winner away to Arsenal in the Continental League Cup quarter-finals.

COURTNEY SWEETMAN KIRK

Alexandra Sweetman-Kirk currently plays as a forward for Sheffield United in the FA Women’s Championship. Before playing for this team, she has also played for various other teams like Leicester City, Doncaster Rovers Belles Liverpool and many more. Little did you know, it was in 2013 when Courtney represented England playing the national team for the England U-23.  ecause of her outstanding playing skills, she has been awarded the Fa WSL 2 Players’ Player Of The Year title. Another thing,  Courtney has also served as an occasional match reporter for the Sky Sports Soccer

RACHEL YANKEY

The first professional women's footballer in England, her nation's most-capped player and the winner of 27 major trophies, Rachel Yankey has had some career. First playing with Arsenal LFC aged 16 in 1996, the winger surpassed Peter Shilton's long-standing England record on her way to 129 caps, in addition to five for the Olympic Great Britain squad. She has claimed every major English honour multiple times and won the 2007 UEFA Women's Cup, as well as being appointed a United Kingdom MBE in 2006  upgraded to OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire).
