Football Ferns coach Jitka Klimková was “almost jumping’’ to celebrate an equaliser when Liv Chance’s shot crashed off the post in a 1-0 loss to South Korea in Christchurch. Klimková and most of the 5037-strong crowd at Orangetheory Stadium thought Chance was sure to hit the target in the 80th minute on Saturday to cancel out Lee Min-a’s spectacular first-half strike for the Koreans. “In training, Liv is putting those balls into the net,’' Klimková said. “It’s just unfortunate that today was not her day, but we know we can do it, we know we can create those chances and we know we must be far more composed in that final act.’’ As the saying goes, chance can be a fine thing. As fine as the width of the post, or a coat of whitewash.

Chance, who plays for Glasgow Celtic, had several opportunites. Indiah-Paige Riley also blazed over the bar in the final quarter as the Kiwis poured forward in a bid to secure a draw after being outplayed by the Koreans in the middle stages. It was the Football Ferns’ first game in New Zealand for four years and first in Christchurch since 1991, and Klimková felt the home crowd inspired them. “I think one reason why we finished so strong because of the fans. I want to thank them, and I hope we inspired more and more people to come and watch us.’’  “The start and the end of the game was the way we want to play and perform. It’s great for everyone to realise that we can play against anybody knowing that Korea are very tough opposition. They are above us in Fifa rankings, they were the favourites for this game, but we’ve learned that we can play, we can create chances and they were on their back foot.’’
