Le résultat n'aurait peut-être pas dû être aussi surprenant car l'Ajax était alors champion d'Europe après avoir battu l'AC Milan 1-0 en mai dernier.Mais la victoire au Bernabeu reste le seul match de ses 27 ans de carrière qui a donné à Van Gaal une totale satisfaction. "C'était un match parfait le seul à mes yeux", a-t-il déclaré.
 "Je n'ai pas réussi cela avec Manchester United." L'équipe de l'Ajax avait ses stars comme Marc Overmars, Edwin van der Sar et Edgar Davids, qui ont ensuite eu des carrières stellaires. Ils étaient dirigés par Danny Blind, dont le fils Daley joue aussi à l'Ajax apres un passage pas vraiment genial sous Van Gaal à Old Trafford.

Litmanen a ouvert le score à la 65e minute, Kluivert scellant la victoire à la 76e.L'Ajax a atteint la finale cette saison-là, perdant face à la Juventus.
