The Manchester United side, which also featured household names like Bobby Charlton, Willie Morgan, and David Sadler, finally ran out 8-2 winners, with Best hitting six of the goals. The Northampton Town defence were unable to cope with George Best who managed to score on six occasions as Manchester United demolished The Cobblers in front of nearly 22,000 spectators at County Ground. The floodgates opened for Wilf McGuinness´s men as Best headed home a Brian Kidd cross from the right-hand side of the field on 20 minutes, and just a minute later the twenty-three-year-old attacker doubled the advatage for the visitors when he received a through ball from David Sadler and rounded Northampton goalkeeper Kim Book, the brother of Manchester City defender Tony Book, to score.

 

 

Following the restart, the Northern Ireland international made it a hat-trick after a scramble in the Northampton goalmouth two minutes into the second half and then netted his fourth goal ten minutes later when he headed another cross from Kidd into the back of the net. Kidd himself was the next player on the scoresheet as the striker converted a precise corner-kick from Willie Morgan before Best notched up Manchester United´s sixth goal in the contest. And shortly after, substitute Francis Burns found Kidd who scored his second goal of the afternoon after Book had failed to hold an effort from Morgan. Northampton forward Dixie McNeil pulled one back for the home team a few moments later, but the imperious Best once again found the back of the net after receiving a square pass from midfield enforcer Paddy Crerand. Then, in the closing stages of the one sided-affair, an accurate cross from Northampton frontman John Fairbrother found striking partner Frank Large who managed to beat away goaltender Alex Stepney with a close range header, making the final score 8-2 in favour of United.
