So far so good for Harry Redknapp and Tottenham during the festive period after their battling 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day placed them fifth in the table, just seven points adrift of leaders Manchester United.

Redknapp pointed out that Spurs are 33-1 to win the title after the victory at Villa Park, and while they still seem to be some way off mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League crown, another three points against Newcastle at White Hart Lane will certainly stand them in a strong position at the half way point of the season.

Newcastle, meanwhile, did not fare so well on Sunday, as Alan Pardew lost his first game at the club - his second in charge - in the 3-1 home defeat to Manchester City.

The Magpies' last visit to White Hart Lane saw them lose 1-0 to a solitary Darren Bent goal on their way to relegation to the Championship, but the Tyneside club have enjoyed some success on their travels to N17, winning the two previous meetings at the ground, scoring seven goals in the process.

Newcastle's last victory in north London back in March 2008 saw them run out 4-1 winners, with Nicky Butt, Geremi, Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins getting on the scoresheet, and while the personnel has dramatically changed, Pardew will have his fingers crossed for a similar result.

Arsene Wenger's charges might be relieved this game doesn't fall on Boxing Day, as if there is one criticism regularly thrown at the side in recent weeks, it is that they are rarely up for a fight. Nowhere has that been more obvious than in the biggest games, which Arsenal have conspicuously failed to win in recent times. Both matches against their nearest rivals, Manchester United and Chelsea, were lost last season, and they have started this campaign in similarly poor fashion. Their recent 1-0 defeat to United was disappointing, but they can get back on track with a psychologically important win against the Blues, who got the better of their first meeting earlier in the season.

Manchester derbies in the 1970s were frequently bad tempered. In the December 1970 derby, a tackle by George Best broke the leg of Glyn Pardoe; the severity of the injury almost resulted in the City defender losing his leg. The following season, an entertaining 3–3 draw saw Francis Lee accuse George Best  of diving and emphasised the point to the referee by throwing himself theatrically to the floor. The first derby of the 1973–74 season saw Mike Doyle and Lou Macari each receive a red card  in a dour contest which finished 0–0. Both players refused to leave the pitch, leading the referee to take both teams back to the dressing room until the two players accepted their dismissals...

Critiqué, Gerard Houllier sait que sa formation est en danger, tout comme son poste. La zone de relégation n'est plus très loin et le Français n'a pas vraiment les résultats escomptés pour le moment.

Les Villans, auteurs d'une première partie de saison assez catastrophique, doive se rattraper devant leur public avec la venue de Tottenham. Mais en face, les Spurs sont ambitieux et savent que Villa Park est tout sauf une forteresse imprenable cette saison...

Xavi est issu du centre de formation (la Masia) du FC Barcelone, club dans lequel il a fait ses premiers pas en juillet 1991 à l'âge de 11 ans. Il arrive en équipe B en 1997 et permet à la réserve du club de monter en Segunda Division A, le Championnat d'Espagne de football D2, niveau auquel Xavi n'évoluera pas puisqu'il est appelé pour rejoindre le groupe professionnel.
Il dispute son premier match avec l'équipe A en Supercoupe d'Espagne contre le RCD Majorque lors de l'été 1998. Il débute la rencontre comme titulaire et marque un but. Dès lors, Louis van Gaal lui renouvelle sa confiance et Xavi participe activement à la conquête du titre de champion de la Liga 1998-99.
Durant la saison 1999-2000, suite à la blessure de Josep Guardiola, Xavi se retrouve titulaire. L'année suivante il gagne sa place au milieu de terrain pour devenir l'organisateur numéro 1 du jeu catalan. Avec tous les entraîneurs qu'il a connu, Xavi s'est imposé comme un pilier du FC Barcelone. A 25 ans, il avait déjà atteint le seuil de 300 parties jouées sous le maillot blaugrana.

La Coupe des confédérations 2001 est la cinquième édition de la Coupe des confédérations. C'est la Corée du Sud et le Japon qui ont accueilli  la Coupe des Confédérations. Ce fut un grand succès, et en particulier pour la France. Invités à la compétition en tant que champions du monde en titre, les Bleus l'ont survolé et ont réussi, au final, à s'offrir une nouvelle ligne à leur palmarès. Ils y ont pris goût puisque deux ans plus tard, ils récidivèrent, sur leur sol, et devenaient le premier pays à remporter cette compétition plus d'une fois.
