Leading up to the match, Ajax Manager Cruyff had been critical of Michels for using so many of his players for National Team duty to the detriment of his own club’s interests. Ajax were the team on the rise with many technical players and it made sense that most would be selected from there as opposed to PSV that relied on foreign players such as Belgium’s Eric Gerets and Denmark’s Ivan Nielsen and Frank Arnesen.
