In season 1973-1974 was put an end to the three-year hegemony of CSKA on the terrain at home. CSKA had to give up the title in Bulgaria and be satisfied only with the Cup of the Soviet Army, which was won after the final against the eternal rival. However, the Reds were brilliant as never before in Europe and then the legend about the "Killer of Champions" was launched. In the first round in the European Champions Cup tournament the Austrian Swarovski Wacker was removed without any problems after 2 wins with a total score 4:0. CSKA won the game in Sofia with 3:1 and played a second successful re match with 1:0. In the next phase of the championship fate had decided the Reds to play again against Ajax, which at this time had won three consecutive titles in the most prestigious European tournament. After a minimal loss in Amsterdam with a goal by Pete Kaiser came the rematch in Sofia when came the end of the "Ajax" era in Europe. In the overcrowded "Vasil Levski" Stadium the Reds displayed their strongest game in Europe up to that moment and managed to win with 1:0 with a goal by Dimitar Marashliev. In the extra time Stefan Mihaylov shot the decisive goal and the star team of Ajax was eliminated.
