At the begining of the 1970-71 season, Clough had already made one major dip into the transfer market when, in September, he paid well over £50,000 for Preston's Scottish Under-23 international midfielder, Archie Gemmill. Then Roy McFarland was injured in a 2-1 Baseball Ground defeat at the hands of Newcastle. The Rams' already desperately limited first-team pool was seriously weakened.

Zenit need to overturn a three-goal deficit if they want to reach the Europa League quarter-finals. The 2008 UEFA Cup winners were clear favourites to progress from the last-16 tie before they were stunned by a 3-0 defeat in Enschede a fortnight ago. A Luuk de Jong double and a strike from Denny Landzaat gave the Russians a huge mountain to climb, but their Italian coach is convinced that his side can go through having performed a similar second-leg comeback against Young Boys Berne in the previous round.
