When the England captain Bryan Robson went up the Wembley steps to receive the FA Cup after his club's 1—0 victory in the replay against Crystal Palace, he became the first captain to do so three times. Robson had led United to their victory over Brighton in 1983 - scoring twice in the replay nd also collected a winners' medal and the trophy when his club defeated Everton in the 1985 final. In 1990, on the eve of his departure to the World Cup in Italy, his contribution was just as emphatic. Robson scored in the first semi-final against Oldham at Maine Road, then headed United's equaliser at Wembley after Gary O'Reilly had put Palace in front. The late 70s saw the young Robson first emerge on Match of the Day as a versatile member of Ron Atkinson's team at West Bromwich Albion, who qualified for Europe three years out of four.
