Liverpool In Europe

European football demanded new tactics. The old hit-and-run, tackle hard, style of the English game was hardly appropriate to European matches, and the opposition were often an unknown force. As Emlyn Hughes pointed out: 'European teams always threw up a new trick, a new move, a new free kick, a new corner or something. And you had to be ready for it. In the first division you knew everything about everybody, But in Europe it was very different.  Liverpool usually send spies out, but they do not always get much more than one look at the opposition. If it is an Eastern European team, or one in the midst of their winter break, the Reds's scouts would not even get that. Bill Shankly used to stress the importance of patience. He told Liverpool never to get frustrated by the opposition. Shanks warned his players that it was all too easy in a second leg, particularly at home, when time was ticking by and they were striving for a goal, to throw caution to the wind. That way, he said, played into the hands of Continental teams, who are quick on the counterattack.

Focus On : Bryan Robson

When the England captain Bryan Robson went up the Wembley steps to receive the FA Cup after his club's 1—0 victory in the replay against Crystal Palace, he became the first captain to do so three times. Robson had led United to their victory over Brighton in 1983 - scoring twice in the replay nd also collected a winners' medal and the trophy when his club defeated Everton in the 1985 final. In 1990, on the eve of his departure to the World Cup in Italy, his contribution was just as emphatic. Robson scored in the first semi-final against Oldham at Maine Road, then headed United's equaliser at Wembley after Gary O'Reilly had put Palace in front. The late 70s saw the young Robson first emerge on Match of the Day as a versatile member of Ron Atkinson's team at West Bromwich Albion, who qualified for Europe three years out of four.

New York Cosmos 1977 1983 "Soccer Spectacular Goals" 55 Great Goals

Italian Giorgio Chinaglia scored more goals than any player in NASL history, earning 193 goals in 213 regular season games, and 50 goals in  43 playoff games for the Comos in his 7 year North American career.  His  career started with Swansea in the Welsh league in 1964-65, continuing to Italy 3rd Div. Massese and Internapoli before being signed to Lazio in 1969-70, where he had a distinguished career before being signed by  the Cosmos in 1976. During his NASL career, he because one of the league's most recognizable players, being the NASL's leading scorer in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, and 1982.  He was NASL MVP in 1981, and lead the Cosmos to four championships in 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1982.  Later in his NASL career,

Tottenham Hotspur Season Review 2010 2011

which Martin Jol has returned to London has also seen Spurs revert to the status they held for most of the Dutchman's tenure in N17 -content with fifth place despite subsequently struggling to hold on to their star men.
Yet this satisfaction could prove misplaced. Not only was Hurry Redknapp's assertion that last season was "as good as it's gonna get" Modric and co that it was worth hanging around, the task the Lilywhites face in striving for another top-four finish is almost certain to be tougher this time around. What will frustrate Spurs most of all is that, for once, it wasn't their record against the elite that let them down last season - rather their results against those at the other end of the table. Wins away to Arsenal and Liverpool (both the first in the league since 1992-93) were counter-balanced by defeats at Blackpool and West Ham, while three of the bottom five took points at White Hart Lone. However, there is still plenty about which to be positive. If Brad Friedel can maintain his performances of the last five years, Tottenham have signed one of the best keepers in the league while the returning Kyle Walker looks ready to slot in at right-back from the get-go. Indeed, learning when to rest their stars could be what helps Spurs go one better than last term. While permanent fixtures Rafael van der Vaort and Goreth Bale looked to be lagging towards the end of the season, Niko Kranjcar and Sebastien Bassong - both key members of the side who finished fourth the year before - were vocal in their dissatisfaction at being overlooked by Redknapp so regularly.
