Stellenbosch FC caused an upset for Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership opener at Danie Craven Stadium. Stellies managed to secure a 1-0 win over Pirates at home, thanks to Antonio van Wyk’s solo goal. Pirates were doing a fine job of frustrating the hosts in the opening stage of the first period.  However, Steve Barker‘s men did not just sit back and watch the Buccaneers do as they please on their own turf. As the half progressed, the complexion of the contest changed with both sides testing each other’s goals. The showdown calmed down a bit as the first half drew on, although the Pirates were still finding it difficult to settle into the rhythm of the game. In the 42nd of the match, van Wyk broke the deadlock for the home side.

The half-time break whistle blew, with the scoreline still 1-0 in favour of Stellenbosch. In the second stanza, Pirates came out guns blazing as they wanted an equaliser while time is still on their side. On the other hand, Stellies struggled to threaten the visitor’s goalkeeper. The Sea Robbers had a couple of clear-cut chances in the second half to level matters but failed to make use of them. The Cape Winelands club continued to put in a resilient defensive performance to make sure Pirates don’t pull one back. Whereas the Soweto giants’ technical team threw on all the weapons they had on the bench as they desperately chased the game. However, Pirates looked to be the better side in the second half, as they did everything in their power to take command of the match.  Stellenbosch’s game plan totally worked in their favour, as they managed to hold on till the last minute of the game. In the end, it was the home side that claimed all the valuable three points over Bucs.
