Les «Oranje», premières de leur groupe devant les Etats-Unis, sont venues à bout des championnes d’Afrique en titre, 54e au classement FIFA. Elles ont dû compter sur leur efficacité offensive. Dès la 9e minute, à la suite d’un corner, la milieu Jill Roord, qui a fait parler sa taille, a ouvert le score de la tête après une première tête repoussée de la Parisienne Lieke Martens, qui a eu ensuite un but refusé pour hors-jeu (54e). La joueuse du PSG est également à l’origine du deuxième but: elle a servi l’attaquante Lineth Beerensteyn, qui a profité d’une erreur de main de la gardienne Kaylin Swart (68e). Le parcours historique des Sud-africaines s’est donc arrêté dimanche au Sydney Football Stadium, encore à guichets fermés. But three big setbacks  the first-half losses of Jermaine Seoposenwe (30th) and Bambanani Mbane (42nd) to injury, and goalkeeper Kaylin Swart allowing Lineth Beerensteyn’s second for Holland through her arms in the 64th — combined to take the game away from Banyana. Ellis said South Africans should be proud of the team for becoming the first senior national side from the country to reach a World Cup knockout stage, and their performance there.
