Nothing came of the big dream of SV Guntamatic Ried’s third cup title: a strong performance in the 0:3 defeat in the ÖFB cup final against champions Salzburg was not enough to prevent the double from Austria’s dominator. 3,000 Rieder fans who traveled with them turned the cup final in the Wörthersee Arena in Klagenfurt into a home game from the very first minute – not only the Innviertler supporters believed in the sensation: “Faith, will, courage” is the slogan of the ÖFB Cup – attributes that the Innviertler also showed from the first minute against the almost overwhelming opponent. Symbolic of this was a free kick in the sixth minute: Stefan Nutz had put the ball in the center circle – and was also the Vikings’ last man at the same time: all the other Rieders had gathered in and around Salzburg’s opposing penalty area.
The courageous and aggressive appearance of coach Christian Heinle’s team hardly allowed Salzburg to come into play – but with the few quick counterattacks by the champions, it also offered a lot of space for the sprint rockets around goalscorer Karim Adeyemi: After nine minutes, Ried’s defense chief Markus Lackner, who had the gave up the rook in the back three, misjudged the running duel against Adeyemi. The 20-year-old German was able to pass the ball past Ried goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger, but Tin Plavotic saved from the line. The Salzburg situation that led to the opening goal was far less concrete: Adeyemi put the ball back to Luka Sucic, who plucked up courage from 18 meters and scored right into the cross corner – 1-0.
Ironically, it was an Upper Austrian who put Rieder on the losing road: the native of Linz tore his first football shoes at the lower house clubs Alkoven and Edelweiss Linz, he switched to the Salzburg youth team at the age of 13. In the meantime, the 19-year-old youngster has become an integral part of the first Bulls team and has long been associated with numerous top clubs such as Liverpool FC. While Sucic’s shot was spot-on, Ried’s response to the goal was just a few centimeters short: Stefan Nutz had sent Ante Bajic down, Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Köhn was a hair’s breadth in front of the Ried attacker on the ball. The second half began as the first half had ended – with Bajic having a top chance to equalize (47′): First, the 26-year-old opponent Rasmus Kristensen had left standing, but there was no getting past Köhn: the German saved with one strong save.
The cup trophy was five minutes further out of Ried’s reach: When Noah Okafor crossed in, two Vikings, Lackner and Bajic, miscalculated, Maximilian Wöber scored with a header to make it 2-0 (52nd). It almost got exciting again: After a Plavotic dream pass, Bajic failed when Köhn rushed out, and when substitute Leo Mikic (84th) lobbed, Wöber saved acrobatically on the line. “I can’t do that a second time,” said the Salzburg defender. The 24-year-old was also the center of attention in the 85th minute: he threw himself into a Mikic shot and got the ball on his elbow. Alexander Harkam’s whistle remained silent. Practically in return, Benjamin Sesko made it 3-0. Ried’s fans comforted their team after the final whistle – they celebrated the players who had long stood up to the league Croesus. “Faith, will, courage” – with this approach, Ried will also master the relegation battle.
