After a decade away from European future, the Tannadice side are back with a bang. It was a dream night for Glenn Middleton who made his first start in a tangerine and black jersey. His stunning strike was the only goal of the game. But it was enough to seal it.  Jack Ross is sure to be pleased with his first home game in charge, standing his side in good stead for a Europa Conference League play-off spot.

AZ Alkmaar started the game with a lot of the possession but United did well to start strong, remaining in shape to deter any danger from the Dutch side.  But United got themselves well into the game after 15 minutes or so, enjoying much more possession as time went on. The scores were even at the break, but the Tayside outfit came out all guns blazing in the second half pushing for the opener. The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute after winger Glenn Middleton curled one into the far left corner. New recruit Jamie McGrath got a run out but it was Steven Fletcher who was named man of the match. There is still a lot to do with the second leg taking place next Thursday, but United will be full of confidence after a strong display in front of of a 14,000 strong home support. It is an exciting time for all involved at Tannadice.
