Il y a 25 ans, l'arrêt Bosman révolutionnait le football européen. Si les sportifs européens ont aujourd'hui le droit de jouer dans le pays de leur choix, c'est à un ancien footballeur méconnu qu'ils le doivent. Le 15 décembre 1995, la cour de justice des communautés européennes arbitre un litige entre Jean-Marc Bosman et le Royal club de Liège. Désireux de s'engager en faveur de Dunkerque, l'international espoir belge conteste les règles qui régissent les mutations. L'arrêt historique rendu par la CJCE va libérer la circulation des joueurs au sein de la Communauté européenne, limitée jusque-là par des quotas liés à la nationalité.
L'UEFA modifie ses règlements à partir de la saison 1996-1997 et acte la multiplication et l'explosion du montant des transferts. L'arrêt Bosman sera complété par l'arrêt Malaja (2002), moins connu mais tout aussi important. Des milliers d'athlètes ont profité de cette révolution, sauf l'intéressé : cinq années de procédures ont ralenti sa carrière et poussé Bosman dans l'isolement et le dénuement. Des syndicats de footballeurs vont lui rendre hommage.

The Film, which features contributions from Rio Ferdinand, Glenn Hoddle and Eni Aluko, follows David Ginola's trip to Belgium to meet the son of a cleaner and a coal worker who, despite being relatively unknown to modern audiences, changed the face of the beautiful game.
