The result meant that Juventus finished the evening seven points behind second-placed Roma and five ahead of fourth-placed Fiorentina. The impressive Alessandro Del Piero gave Juve a 12th-minute lead while Milan had defender Daniele Bonera sent off for a bad tackle on Momo Sissoko. A brace from Hasan Salihamidzic helped the hosts come from behind after former Bianconeri striker Filippo Inzaghi put the Rossoneri 2-1 up. Del Piero almost opened the scoring on five minutes when he cut inside from the right and sent a left-footed drive past Zeljdko Kalac but also wide of the far post. He did get his side off the mark soon afterwards though when he slipped a neat finish off the left-hand post after good interplay by David Trezeguet and Mauro Camoranesi. Milan almost hit back immediately from the restart when Inzaghi put wide after he beat the offside trap, and he levelled with the next opportunity, an almost identical piece of play that saw Kaka drill a low cross that "Pippo" tapped in. It was an open game and even the defence-minded players were over-elaborating, highlighted when Sissoko slid in with a great tackle on Kaka but then gave the ball away and almost played the Brazil star in. Inzaghi put Carlo Ancelotti's side in front just after the half hour when he slotted into an empty net after he and Kaka sprung the offside trap following Juve's failed attempt to clear a free kick. They were close to going 3-1 up before the break when a Kaka volley forced an excellent stop from Gianluigi Buffon, who managed to dive onto the loose ball before Inzaghi pounced.
But it was Juventus who got the next goal, a controversial strike by Salihamidzic, who bundled the ball home after a remarkable reflex save from Kalac had foiled Trezeguet. Milan argued that Salihamidzic was in an offside position when Trezeguet headed Camoranesi's inch-perfect cross from point-blank range but, despite their protests, the equaliser stood and the sides went into the break on level terms. The second half was played at a marginally less breathtaking pace. Zdenek Grygera provoked Kalac into another good stop with a long-range effort, while Guglielmo Stendardo somehow headed the ball clear when he dived in to convert an excellent cross by Sissoko. The turning point came on 67 minutes when Bonera launched into a late, high and dangerous tackle on Sissoko after the ball had long gone. Sissoko managed to continue after treatment, saved from a potential break by the fact his foot had left the turf when contact was made, but the damage was done and Milan went behind soon afterwards. Paolo Maldini fouled Grygera and Camoranesi swung a superb free-kick to the edge of the six yard box where the unmarked Salihamidzic rose to power a header into the left hand side of the net with ten minutes remaining. Del Piero had two good chances in the latter stages, one run and shot that went wide and another finish that Kalac blocked. Milan threw everything forward in the five minutes of injury-time and even Kalac joined the attack in the dying seconds, but Juve held on for the win and Milan's participation in next season's Champions League looks in serious doubt after the defeat left them marooned in fifth position.
Merci!
