RSC Anderlechtois became the fourth side to fail in its bid to win two consecutive finals. Twenty goals in eight matches bore witness to the continuity of their sparkling attacking style and they failed to score only in the first leg of the semi-final against SSC Napoli in front of a fanatical 90,000 crowd. But they won the return 2-0 to clinch a place in the Amsterdam final. Their rivals were a Hamburger SV which, after a modest 1-1 opening draw with the Icelanders of IBK Keflavík, produced some impressive mixtures of superb skill and German resilience. At no time was this more evident than during the semi-final against Club Atlético de Madrid when, after a 3-1 defeat in Spain, they romped to a memorable 3-0 victory at home.25,000 supporters of each club in a crowd of 58,000 generated an electric atmosphere in the Olympisch Stadium. It soon became obvious that the German side containing Manfred Kaltz in defence, Felix Magath and Caspar Memering in midfield and veteran Georg ‘Scorsch’ Volkert on the wing, had sufficient weaponry to repel the Belgian onslaught, even though the Anderlecht coach, Raymond Goethals, fielded Arie Haan in an unusual attacking role. The breakthrough came with only 12 minutes remaining, when the Germans were awarded a penalty and Volkert drove the spot-kick coolly past Jan Ruiter. Anderlecht tried to move up a gear, but it was not to be their night. Magath found a hole in the defence to seal the German victory two minutes from time.
