Feijenoord Stadion, Rotterdam

Attendance 49,000

Spurs became Hie first Brilish side to win a European trophy when they whipped Alletico Madrid 5-1 in Rotterdam on 15 May in the final of the Cup-Winners Cup. What another "glory, glory" night this was for their fans, out in force in Holland lo see them take on the holders. Spurs suffered a blow before the game, when the dynamic Dave Mackay failed a fitness lest. But inspired by their captain, Danny Blanchflower, and with Cliff Jones unstoppable on the right wing, they took a two-goal half-time lead through Greaves and White. The match, however, was to belong to left-winger Terry Dyson. Content usually to play a supporting role to his more illustrious team-males, the little Yorkshireman has never served Spurs better.
Two minutes after the interval, Henry fisted out a goalbound shot, and Collar scored from the spot. For 20 minutes, Spurs needed all their fight and resolve to prevent the revitalized Spaniards from forcing an equalizer. Then Dyson, already proving a handful on the wing, look the match by the scruff of the neck. First he curled in a shot that the keeper could not prevent crossing the line. Then he centred for Greaves to score. And finally he burst 25 yards down the middle and hammered the ball into the net. a glorious climax to a glorious victory.

Tottenham lifted their first piece of European silverware in impressive fashion by defeating holders Atletico Madrid 5-1 in the European Cup Winners' Cup final. To reach the final in Rotterdam, Nicholson's side had been irrepressible at White Hart Lane thrashing both Rangers and Belgrade. However, they were to show that they could do the same away from home too, putting five past the Spaniards. The incomparable Jimmy Greaves put Spurs ahead after 16 minutes before Scottish forward John White added a second before the break. Atletico pulled one back just after half-time but just as doubts began to creep in, Terry Dyson hit a brace with Greaves adding another goal ten minutes before time. Danny Blanchflower lifted the trophy as Spurs became the first English side to taste European glory...
