Copa Centroamericana 2011 in Panama

La Copa Centroamericana 2011 est la onzième édition de la Copa Centroamericana du 14 au 23 janvier 2011, tournoi pour les équipes d'Amérique centrale affiliées à la CONCACAF. Le Panama accueille pour la deuxième fois cette compétition1. Le tournoi sert également de qualifications pour la Gold Cup 2011.

El Salvador and Nicaragua each qualified for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. They have met on seven previous occasions at the Central American championship, with El Salvador winning six straight before tying 1-1 in the 2009 tournament in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. In that game, an 18th minute own goal by Nicaragua's Silvio Aviles put El Salvador ahead. Nicaragua, however, equalized late in the game through Marlon Jose Medina. El Salvador has appeared in the most games in Copa Centroamericana history (45), while Nicaragua holds the record for most defeats (23).

This will be the 10th meeting between Costa Rica and Honduras in Copa Centroamericana play. The Ticos, which have won a record six Central American titles, holds a slight advantage with four wins to Honduras' three. Five of the previous nine meetings between the two rivals in the competition have been decided by one goal or less. The largest margin of victory was by four goals in 1997, when the Ticos won 4-0 at Guatemala City. Costa Rica has conceded one goal or less in 18-consecutive Copa Centroamericana games. Honduras, which played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa, has scored 16 goals in its last six Copa Centroamericana games (but have only one in their last two).

Panama is defending its Central American title on home soil. This will be only the third meeting between host Panamanians and Belize in Copa Centroamericana history. They faced off in a two-leg, preliminary round series in 1997, which Panama won 2-1 on aggregate. Panama has posted shutouts in five of its last seven Copa Centroamericana games, but have more than one goal only once over that stretch.
Belize has never won a Copa Centroamericana match in 17 tries, but they have scored in their last four outings.

According to FIFA records, El Salvador is 6-0-0 overall against Belize (3-0-0 in Copa Centroamericana games).They last met in the competition nearly two years ago in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with the Cuscatlecos coming away 4-1 winners.Alfredo Pacheco scored twice from the penalty spot that day. With its 2-0 win over Nicaragua on Friday, El Salvador snapped three-game losing and goalless streaks in the Copa Centroamericana. The last time El Salvador won two-straight Copa Centroamericana games was in 2007 (2-1 v Belize, 2-1 v Nicaragua). Belize is 0-3-15 in 18 all-time Copa Centroamericana games, conceding at least one goal in every outing.Despite that record, it had scored in four-straight games in the tournament before being shutout by Panama on Friday.
