A look at the track records of players who thrived in a period when aggression and physicality were part and parcel of the English game. In the early 1970s, Leeds United were the dominant force in English football and central to this success was their midfield, led by Irishman Johnny Giles and Scottish captain Billy Bremner. In the 1980, Graeme Souness was winning league titles and European Cups with Liverpool, while Pat Nevin was one of the few players prepared to confront the racism that was fast becoming the scourge of English football. With contributions by Martin O'Neill, Graeme Souness, Pat Nevin, Stuart Cosgrove, Chick Young and Amy Irons.
