Pirates made five changes to the side that drew with Stellenbosch, as Kwape Peprah and Vincent Pule got their first starts of the season alongside recalls for Thabiso Monyane, Thabang Monare and Deon Hotto. In Chippa's camp, Justice Chabalala started against his former side. The hosts got off to a quick start as Peprah had a chance to break the deadlock on ten minutes after a good delivery by Thembinkosi Lorch but he guided his header just wide of the far post The Buccaneers stretched the Chilli Boys' defence through Monyane eight minutes later, who played a cut-back on the platter towards the back post but defender Ronald Pfumbidzai denied Hotto a tap-in with a crucial clearance. Jose Riveiro's charges continued to dictate terms and Hotto had a big chance ten minutes before the halftime break after a through ball by Lorch but he dragged his shot wide of the far post with only goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua to beat. Chippa struggled to hold onto possession and were hardly a threat on counter-attacks but Diego Appollis had a rare chance on the stroke of halftime after he broke through on goal but his shot was thwarted by shot-stopper Richard Ofori at the near post.
Pirates continued to spurn opportunities in front of goal and on the hour-mark, Riveiro eventually brought on Bienvenu Eva Nga against his former side in place of Peprah for fresh legs upfront. Eva Nga almost had an instant impact as he came close to breaking the deadlock for the Buccaneers 20 minutes before time with a diving header at the near post that missed wide after a cross by Lorch. Chippa kept the game on the edge in the closing stages as they looked for chances on counter-attacks instead defending deep, as Andile Mbenyane replaced de Brooklyn Poggenpoel in an attacking change. The Chilli Boys eventually broke the deadlock four minutes before time after Abdi Banda powered a free header past Ofori from close-range after a corner by Janovane September. Pirates fought hard in the dying minutes and Pule came close to equalising in stoppage time with a thumping volley that was brilliantly parried over the crossbar by Kazapua, as Klate's men held on to their first win of the season and their first victory over the Buccaneers since 2016.
