SuperSport were bolstered by the return from injury of Thamsanqa Gabuza while new signing, former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Aubrey Ngoma started from the bench. John Maduka's charges had a perfect start after Mxolisi Macuphu gave them the lead in the ninth minute with a wonderful first-time volley at the near post after a cross by Zukile Mkhize. Matsatsantsa had a big chance to equalise just after that after they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Gabuza in the box but Jamie Webber's spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Hugo Nyame. Kaitano Tembo's men were pinning back Royal in their own half for the better part of the first stanza and Iqraam Rayners should have levelled matters just before the half-time break after going clear on goal, one-on-one with Nyame but his side-footed shot missed the gaping net wide of the far post.

SuperSport maintained their attacking momentum in the early stages of the second stanza but were unable to break down Royal's compact defence, which saw Ngoma introduced on the hour-mark in place Moses Waiswa. Ngoma had an immediate impact, as he came close to snatching the equaliser for United in the 73rd minute with a diving header from Rayners' chip in the box that missed the near post by a whisker. However, Thwihli Thwahla were awarded a penalty three minutes later after a handball by Guily Manziba in the box and Victor Letsoalo made no mistake from the spot-kick, as he doubled the visitors' lead with a low strike that sent goalkeeper Ronwen Williams the wrong way and found the bottom corner. Matsatsantsa lacked the urgency going forward in the dying minutes as Royal comfortably held on to move up to second on the table and completed a league double over United.
