Melbourne City were reduced to 10 men in the club’s Isuzu UTE A-League season opener against Newcastle Jets when midfielder James Jeggo saw red at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Jeggo, who was a victim of a heavy challenge from Jets midfielder Kosta Grozos just minutes before the red card, was sent off by referee Shaun Evans after consultation with the fourth official and linesman for a stamp on the back of Jets midfielder Eli Adams in the 68th minute of the Round 1 fixture. Jeggo had bundled Adams over in a scrap for possession and in the process of getting back to his feet, planted his left foot in the back of the Newcastle youngster. City led the encounter 1-0 at the time of Jeggo’s send-off. Two minutes after the incident, Evans returned to the field of play to brandish the red card at the Socceroo and reduce the visitors to 10 men for the remainder of the game.
