Wellington Phoenix face a nervous four-day wait to see whether they will be crowned A-League Men premiership winners. The Phoenix kept up their end of the bargain by registering a comfortable 3-0 win over Macarthur at Sky Stadium on Saturday to maintain their one-point advantage at the top of the table. Kosta Barbarouses and Tim Payne scored seven minutes apart midway through the first half to give the Phoenix a two-goal cushion at halftime before substitute Oskar Zawada sealed the club record 15th win of the season with a penalty in added time. But it was still not enough to clinch the club’s first piece of silverware as Central Coast Mariners beat Newcastle Jets 3-1 in Saturday’s other match to remain in control of the premiership race. The defending champions still have a game in hand, against Adelaide United in Gosford on Wednesday, and they now only need to draw to leapfrog the Phoenix into first place.
