Melbourne City kicked off the 2023-24 Liberty A-League season with a 1-0 win away to Wellington Phoenix on Sunday. Hannah Wilkinson was the hero in Wellington, where the New Zealand international star broke the Phoenix’s stubborn resistance with 17 minutes remaining at Sky Stadium. After ‘Nix goalkeeper Rylee Foster spilled a shot, City’s all-time leading women’s goalscorer reacted quickest to ensure the title hopefuls started the season on a winning note. Wellington was blowing a gale in tough conditions for both sides as a quartet of players who featured at the FIFA Women’s World Cup were honoured pre-game – Phoenix pair Annalie Longo and Michaela Foster, as well as City duo Wilkinson and Rebekah Stott and their Canadian goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx.
