Bidvest Wits moved three points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership standings from Mamelodi Sundowns with a 1-0 victory against Orlando Pirates at Bidvest Stadium on Thursday night. Downs (51 points) were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Platinum Stars‚ surely making it advantage Wits (54 points) to earn their first league title in a 96-year history. Cape Town City‚ in third place on 49 points‚ are still in the running but need a win at home against Free State Stars on Friday night to remain in contention.Wits take control of PSL title chase after win over Pirates as Sundowns flop "Stoke City" appear set to win the Absa Premiership title. If Bidvest Wits, compared in playing style to English roughneck specialists Stoke last week by title-rivaling Mamelodi Subdowns coach Pitso Mosimane, win the 2016-17 PSL, they will look back at these past 10 days as the period that clinched their first title in a 96-year history.  The PSL is set for a crazy finish.

Bidvest Wits chairman, Wits alumnus Brian Joffe, was quoted as saying: “We are proud of the players. It’s a great moment – a first title in over 90 years. From the time Gavin got involved with us the team has been building and it cost us money but there has been progress.”

Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Adam Habib said: “Their impressive performance has made us truly proud.”
