Manchester City maintained their unbeaten record in the Women’s Super League against Manchester United after returning to a 1-1 draw with their rivals in front of more than 44,000 fans  a record for a women’s game at the Etihad.United went into the game  the last league game for either side of the year  knowing that a win would draw them level with leaders Chelsea, at least temporarily. Marc Skinner’s side looked like they were putting pressure on reigning champions Emma Hayes as they put the 27th minute lead through Leah Galton, who put the finishing touches to a fluid team movement. City had been enjoying the better first half up to that point but found themselves on the backfoot for the remainder of the opening period, with only a fine slip challenge from Leila Ouahabi preventing Nikita Parris from doubling United’s lead. United’s second chance almost came just after half-time when City defender Alex Greenwood – playing against her former club – nearly put the ball into her own goal when she headed in to clear a cross.

Luckily for Greenwood, the ball flew just wide of the near post and moments later she and her teammates were level. Chloe Kelly made moves on the right wing before moving to the United area where Millie Turner missed her attempt at clearance. Maya Le Tissier was caught off guard by a mistake from her teammate that allowed Laura Coombs the freedom of the six-yard box to nod at City level. Both teams were looking for a win as the game moved to full-time, with Kelly nearly knocking Mary Earps over with a missed cross and Khadija Shaw being twice denied by the United goalkeeper. United also had chances to win the game, with Ellie Roebuck brilliantly denied by Martha Thomas from close range before the City keeper was brilliantly saved by Greenwood in injury time after presenting the ball to United in injury time in her own area. The result left United two points behind Chelsea ahead of the Blues’ game against Reading on Sunday night – continue live Sky Sports – while City is fourth.
