South Africa MTN8 2022 Reports

With the draw made on Monday, Pirates will host Sundowns in the first leg, while Chiefs will also host AmaZulu in the first match. The date and venues are yet to be announced. AmaZulu are probably the underdogs of the competition, but they’ll be eager to spring a surprise and go all the way. Having won against Cape Town City away from home in the quarter-final, Usuthu are proving that they can be a nuisance for any team. Usuthu’s bosses have made it clear that they want to challenge for trophies, and this competition could be their chance to achieve that feat.Sundowns are the team to beat in the MTN8, given the fact that they are the defending champions after ending a 14-year hiatus last season. Their 2-0 win over rivals SuperSport United in the last-eight sent out a bold statement about their intentions to defend their crown.

Meanwhile, Pirates have regularly held the top eight trophy aloft, having won it on 10 occasions, with their last success dating back to 2020. Like their fellow Soweto rivals, Chiefs, Pirates are desperate for silverware especially after enduring a barren campaign last season. Coach Jose Riveiro didn’t receive the best of receptions at the club, with some fans regarding him as ‘another export’, upon his arrival. But he’ll have a chance to prove his detractors wrong if he wins the trophy and follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Josef Zinnbauer.

In line with the spirit of Wafa Wafa – Winner Takes All!The MTN8 Last Fan Standing “recharge and win” competition for consumers and football fans will see one lucky winner walk away with the life-changing prize of R1 million. To stand a chance, participants are encouraged to enter the competition by dialling *144*8# to opt-in, buy a bundle, or recharge with R10 or to stand a chance to win a share of R8 million in prizes. Journalists remain key to the success of the MTN8 tournament and through the Last Journalist Standing competition they also stand a chance to win their share of the R8 million in prizes including R80 000 cash prize for the Last Journalist Standing. MTN will again roll out charitable initiatives aligned to this year’s MTN8 tournament. Through the flagship CSI element known as Goals for Charity, MTN is pledging R20 000 per goal scored in regulation time during the tournament. All proceeds raised will be donated to charity post the tournament. Through the MTN8 Legacy Programme, this year MTN will donate Dream Bags, which consist of football-playing kits, to schools to assist budding soccer players in communities.  For this year’s campaign, MTN announced eight football legends who will partner with them to encourage customers and football fans to participate in activities that have been lined up.
