Jose Riveiro made four changes from the win over Swallows, as Olisa Ndah, Bandile Shandu, Ben Motshwari and Tebogo Tlolane were handed their first starts of the season, while Deon Hotto was surprisingly named on the bench. It was an evenly contested affair in the early stages of the first encounter, although fans in Stellenbosch had to wait until the 17th minute for a first chance as Thembinkosi Lorch volleyed just wide from close range. The hosts had their first chance three minutes later as the young Antonio Van Wyk skipped past one challenge but could only direct his effort into the side-netting. Steve Barker's charges went even closer on 25 minutes when De Goede rose above his marker to meet Junior Mendieta's cross, only to see his header cleared off the line by Innocent Maela. The chances continued to fall for the home side and in particular Van Wyk, who did well to carve out space in the box but ended up blazing over the cross bar seven minutes before the break.

Stellies were made to rue those missed chances as Pirates opened the scoring from a minute before the interval, with off-season signing Nkosinathi Sibisi nodding home a corner at the near post. The Buccaneers opted for change at the start of the second half, as Hotto was introduced in place of Tlolane while the hosts kept faith with the same side. However, Stellies came out firing in the second half and were rewarded eight minutes in when Mendieta rose above Maela to nod home a cross from Fawaaz Basadien. Riveiro opted for a double change just after the hour mark, as new signing Miguel Timm made his debut in place of Motshwaro, while Vincent Pule replaced Kabelo Dlamini. Both charges continued to press for the go-ahead goal as the second half continued, but the final ball was lacking at both ends of the pitch, much to the frustration of the supporters. That proved to be the trend for the remainder of the second stanza as Stellies and Pirates settled for a share of the spoils, with the hosts still searching for their first win of the season.
