Sundowns made only one change to the team that beat Cape Town City, as Rushine De Reuck was preferred over Mosa Lebusa while new signing Abubeker Nasir was named on the bench. Meanwhile, Sibusiso Vilakazi started for the Rockets against his former side. The Brazilians shifted quickly in attack in the opening exchanges and Neo Maema had a chance to open the scoring on 17 minutes after a pass into the pocket of space in the box by Aubrey Modiba but he blazed his shot over the crossbar. Sead Ramovic's charges were organised defensively as they frustrated Sundowns, but they broke the deadlock from a quick counter-attack 11 minutes before the break after Lifa Hlongwane pounced on a rebound from Ronwen Williams' to find the bottom corner. The Rockets should have doubled their lead a couple of minutes later after Vilakazi beat the off-side trap from Aphelelo Teto's defence-splitting pass but his attempted chip was smothered by Williams. Sundowns raised their game early in the second stanza as Thabiso Kutumela came close to finding the equaliser with a header in the box that missed the upright by a whisker after a cross by Modiba.

The Brazilians needed fresh legs just after the hour-mark with a triple change, as Nasir got his debut in place of Kutumela while Sipho Mbule and Andile Jali replaced Haashim Domingo and Teboho Mokoena in midfield. Sundowns struggled to break down Galaxy's low block even after the changes, but Modiba had a chance to restore parity 11 minutes before time with free-kick from outside the box but he was unable to replicate his goal against Cape Town City as he went wide of the mark. The hosts pinned back the Rockets in their own half in the closing stages but were unable to find a way through and Masilake Phohlongo nearly sealed the deal for the visitors in the last minute with a threatening strike that missed the far post just wide. Substitute Gaston Sirino missed a big chance for Sundowns in stoppage time at the near post after he looped his shot high and wide of the mark, as the Rockets held on for their first win of the season and their first-ever victory over the Brazilians.
