Pirates made two changes to the side that edged past Royal AM, as Tapelo Xoki and Vincent Pule were recalled at the expense of Innocent Maela and Thembinkosi Lorch while SuperSport defender Thulani Hlantshwayo started against his former side. Matsatsantsa had a chance to go ahead within the first two minutes after Bradley Grobler glanced a diving header just wide of the far post after a cross by Thapelo Maseko. Pirates pressed SuperSport quiet high and they nearly profited from a forced error on 24 minutes after Deon Hotto went through on goal in the box but his shot hit the side-netting after he was setup by Pule. The Buccaneers continued to pressurise Gavin Hunt's charges and Pule had a chance to break the deadlock ten minutes before the break after he was given space to shoot on the edge of the box but his low strike was punched away by shot-stopper George Chigova. Pirates had a bright start in the second stanza as Bienvenu Eva Nga came close to finding the breakthrough with a strike across goal that was wonderfully saved by Chigova after a through ball by Goodman Mosele.

The Buccaneers were finding spaces and chances in the last third but were wasteful in the box, which prompted coach Jose Riveiro to make a double attacking change on 67 minutes as Zakhele Lepasa and Lorch replaced Eva Nga and Kabelo Dlamini. Matsatsantsa had a better ball retention after they introduced Iqraam Rayners and Thamsanqa Gabuza, who should have put United ahead in the last five minutes from an error at the back but the former Pirates striker miscued his shot in front of an open net. SuperSport looked revived upfront and Rayners almost snatched the winner in the last minute with a volley that flashed just wide of the top corner. The clash did end on a sour note for the visitors after Lorch was stretchered off injured in second-half stoppage time after colliding with Thatoyaone Ditlhokwe, as the sides settled for a share of the spoils in the end.
