It just wasn’t in the cards for the Portland Thorns in the 2022 Women’s International Champions Cup. Chalk it up to a chock-full August schedule, bad luck, or a pair of top-tier opponents, but the Thorns still came out of the tournament winless. Their 11-game unbeaten streak in the National Women’s Soccer League remains intact, however, as does their place at the top of the league standings. The tournament host Thorns fell 1-0 to Chelsea FC on Saturday at Providence Park in the WICC third place match, days after an upset loss at the hands of Mexican side C.F. Monterrey in penalty kicks. Portland was the reigning WICC champion.
