Goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and Siphelele Mthembu handed Kaizer Chiefs a 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After a slow start to the game, Chiefs came close to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute, as a good passing move ended up with Siboniso Gaxa picking out Kingston Nkatha but the striker could not keep his header down.Pirates' best chance of the half arrived in the 36th minute as Thandani Ntshumayelo did well to skip past Renielwe Letsholonyane before firing an effort into the side-netting.
Those chances proved to be the only talking points from the first stanza, while neither side managed to register an effort on target. Stuart Baxter's side had more of the possession in the opening 45 minutes, with Letsholonyane and Siphiwe Tshabalala looking lively. Meanwhile, Pirates' striker Lehlohonolo Majoro looked isolated upfront and often had no support whenever he was in possession of the ball. However, Chiefs took the lead five minutes after the halftime break thanks to a wonderful finish from Tshabalala, after he was picked out by Bernard Parker. Letsholonyane should have doubled the lead in the 64th minute but the midfielder scooped his effort onto the frame of the goal from point-blank range. Eric Tinkler brought on the likes of Kermit Erasmus, Mpho Makola and Thabo Matlaba in the hope of getting an equaliser for Pirates. However, it was Siphelele Mthembu who popped up in stoppage time to seal the win for Chiefs with a finish from close range.
