For United, the semi-final fell against the backdrop of their title race with Newcastle, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side well on their way to clawing back a 12-point deficit to Kevin Keegan's Magpies as they chased the Double, spurred on by losing the title to Blackburn the year before and the FA Cup final to Everton.

Glenn Hoddle's Chelsea were looking to end a 25-year wait for major trophy, having lost in the Cup Winners' Cup semi-final in 1995 and been beaten by United in the 1994 FA Cup final. They had been buoyed by the arrival of Ruud Gullit at the start of the season and were well set for a top-half finish for the first time since 1990.Chelsea were also galvanised by United's defensive problems, with captain Steve Bruce injured in the warm-up to see him join first-choice defenders Denis Irwin and Gary Pallister on the sidelines. It meant Ferguson - then just Alex - started with a makeshift back four of Phil Neville, Gary Neville, David May and Lee Sharpe.United had the first chance, with Beckham hitting the post from a Ryan Giggs cross, before Blues defender Michael Duberry nearly scored what would have surely been the best goal of his career - cutting in from the right and curling a left-footed effort from 25 yards on to Peter Schmeichel's crossbar.
