"Ruud Geels is not of the Van Basten and Cruijff class, because at their most fluent those two were the better footballers and had more of an effect on how later generations played the sport. Geels was however about as good as Van Nistelrooij, not useless with the ball, and he had the orientation to be on the right spots. That would be my estimate." Louis van Gaal.

Ruud Geels was the fourth son of the baker Henk Geels. Ruud was always seen as a hard worker, kind, modest and social. Like Van Hanegem a working class image (to the extent this anglosaxon conception existed), but not a glamour boy. Geels was a quantifiable volume scorer for big and small teams alike, whose two goals delivered the bronze medal at euro 1976 (first goal, second goal). In 1975 he was 6th in the Ballon d'Or, highest placed striker, and in his career - at the highest divisions of each level - he scored 605 goals in 741 games. If also all the other games are added up, he ends at 1026 verifiable goals. Geels won once the silver boot and has two additional bronze boots. In 1978 he could sign for Real Madrid or Barcelona, but he let that go.
Ruud Geels was five times topscorer of the league (four consecutive times for Ajax between 1975 and 1978; 1981 for small Sparta) and without penalties he would have been topscorer of the Belgian league as well (at that time 3rd in the coefficients ranking). In Europe he registered 26 goals (1 penalty) in 40 matches. For the national team he was on the bench in 1974. The kind-hearted Geels felt uneasy with the security measures and the lack of privacy, further made worse by the cynical humor of the duo Krol and Suurbier. "The worst weeks in my life", said Geels years later. In 1978 he refused to travel. Geels came to 11 goals in 20 caps and on a per minute rate he even rivals his contemporary Cruijff (1 goal per 119 minute vs 1 per 130 minutes). What speaks in his favor is that he always seemed to find the net. Played out of position (for Feyenoord, Brugge), playing for 'small' Go Ahead or Sparta, he always seemed to score at a competitive rate. Geels was chosen into the 60 years Eredivisie team, something which surprised him (some of the competition won after all things as golden boots, silver boots too). 'Voetbal International' remarks in their profile: "Yet Geels never fully managed to shake off the doubts and therefore he doesn't appear higher in this top 50". One computer study of the Groningen University in 2010 put him at place 103 of all players since 1954. His goals could be spectacular, which is perhaps to be expected if you score 600+ goals. Then there are always some in the collection that might appeal to viewers. One of his most recalled high points was scoring five goals against Feyenoord in 1975, which probably helped him to that high BdO ranking.
