A season earlier, Ajax have won the championship which allowed them to play in the Champions Leauge in the season 1994/1995. After four years of trouble, Louis van Gaal took Ajax back to the top. He came in 1991 and with young players from the own academy like, Dennis Bergkamp (who left in 1993), Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Patrick Kluivert and Edwin van der Sar, Van Gaal build a team that had a perfect balance between young, talented players and old, experienced players. Before the away game against AC Milan, Ajax already played the Italian team at home and won: 2-0. Goals by Ronald de Boer and Jari Litmanen. They also beated AEK Athene in Greece and drew two times against Casino Salzburg (currently Red Bull Salzburg). They were top of their group and AC Milan were second. If Ajax would win this game, they’d reach the next round as top of the group for sure. AC Milan were favorites for the win. They won the Champions League in 1994 and were the team to beat.
Ajax came out with a 4-4-3. Van der Sar Reiziger – Blind (c) – Rijkaard – F. de Boer Seedorf – Davids Litmanen Finidi – R. de Boer – Van Vossen
Strong line up, playing the classic Ajax style with two wingers. Litmanen as the creative man behind Ronald de Boer. Two homegrown and very young players as defensive midfielders whilst an two experienced centre backs supported the young full backs Reiziger and Frank de Boer. Van der Sar, as always, made it eleven players. An early goal gave Ajax the lead in the second minute. A lovely pass by Ronald de Boer (a chip over the defence) and Jari Litmanen controlled the ball on his chest and smashed it home. Michael Reiziger: ‘the early lead gave us wings’. Ajax were controlling over AC Milan, outplaying AC Milan, the whole game. Ajax played with passion, without fear and kept pressuring AC Milan for that second goal. They played it like the way that made Ajax famous, the way Ajax should play every game. 4-3-3 with two wingers. Total football. An own goal by Baresi in the 66th minute gave Ajax the win. Full time and a 2-0 win against Milan, away from home. AC Milan supporters applauded for the Sons of God. Respect.
Ajax were through to the knock-out stages. We all know how this season ended. Ajax won the Champions League after beating AC Milan in the final. 1-0, a late goal by the 18 year old Patrick Kluivert. Ajax’ 4th Champions Leauge title in their history.
