Like the first leg in Amsterdam, this match was moved to accommodate a bumper crowd, with the home fans hoping for a miracle in the second leg of their European Cup quarter final.
Three goals up from the first leg, Ajax manned the defences, packed the midfield and effectively suffocated Celtic’s playmakers in front of a crowd of 83,000 that contained 5000 away fans.
They also posed a threat on the counter, breaking at pace and with Arnold Muhren hitting the woodwork. Only once did Celtic’s Lord of the Wing, Jimmy Johnstone, manage to escape his marker and hook home a Bertie Auld free kick. That was the only goal of the game, although Celtic were wondering what might have been after Billy McNeill forced a brilliant save from keeper Heinz Stuy and saw a John Hughes strike disallowed in the second half. The Dutchman were largely in control and unflustered though, even when Celtic piled on the pressure and, with a few aging Lions in his team, Jock Stein knew that he had a rebuild on his hands in the summer.
