Back in 1996, Aston Villa won their last piece of silverware against Leeds United at the old Wembley. Back then, Brian Little was the manager, and Villa’s defence had “God” in the middle of it. There will be few Villa fans who have forgotten Savo Milosevic’s first half strike as the often chided Yugoslavian striker pulled a stunner out of the bag to put the Villans ahead at the end of the first half.

The second half yielded two more goals from Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke, with the defeat spelling the beginning of the end of Howard Wilkinson’s tenure as Leeds’ manager. However, it wasn’t for the Villans to care about Wilkinson’s demise with the win giving Villa their fifth league cup win, an equal of the then record with Liverpool.
