One week after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Partick Thistle in a first leg, quarter-final tie in the League Cup, Celtic faced tougher opposition in the European Cup, when Ajax arrived at Celtic Park on this day in 1982.

It was a first round, first leg tie and a crowd of 56,229 had turned up to see how Celtic, at that point top of the league table after three games, would cope with the Dutch stars. Manager Billy McNeill had put out what most people would have regarded as his strongest side – Bonner, McGrain, McAdam, Moyes, Reid, McStay, Burns, MacLeod, Provan, Nicholas, McGarvey – while the name of Johann Cryuff was the one catching the attention in the Ajax side.

In only 4 minutes, the visitors took the lead through inside-left Olsen; ten minutes later, Celtic equalised from the penalty spot through Charlie Nicholas after Cruyff, of all people, had up-ended Tommy Burns well inside the penalty area; in 18 minutes, Ajax went 2-1 up, Cruyff steering a fine pass through the Hoops defence into the path of Lerby, who chipped the ball over Pat Bonner; and Frank McGarvey made it 2-2 in 27 minutes, latching on to a Davie Moyes header and shooting under the Dutch goalkeeper.

Ajax: Galje, Monenaar, Van Veen, Molby, Boeve, Shoenaker, Vanenburg, Cruyff (Molenaar), Lerby, Olsen, Kieft
Celtic: Bonner, McGrain, Aitken, McAdam, Reid, Provan (McCluskey 72), Sinclair, McStay (Moyes 78), MacLeod, McGarvey, Nicholas Subs:Latchford Sullivan Crainie

at the Olympic Stadium, Charlie Nicholas scored a magnificent goal to give Celtic a half-time lead. Vanenburg equalised midway through the second half and Celtic were heading for defeat on the away goals rule. With only two minutes left on the clock George McCluskey scored to send Celtic into the next round.

“We were extremely disappointed to lose the two goals in the first leg in Glasgow,” George McCluskey said. “I think they were happy to go back home with the draw, and we were a wee bit cautious of losing a late one and going over there with the disadvantage. At least when it´s a draw you´re in with a shout, I think going over there 3-2 down would have been a thankless task. “I was carrying a wee injury and it was debatable whether I would travel or not. But Big Billy asked me to go, because at that time it was any two from me, Frank McGarvey and Charlie Nicholas to play up front, and between the three of us we scored over 100 goals that year - we were scoring a phenomenal amount of goals.“The last 10 minutes of the game suited us because we were out of it so we had nothing to lose. My goal was one the three of us were all involved in – Charlie got it, passed it to Frank, who passed it to me. I drew the centre-half out and went by him. I struck it with my left foot and it went right across the box. I caught it sweet as a nut. “I remember going into their dressing room after the game trying to swap my jersey but every one of them had their heads down. They all said no, and told me to get out, but as I was going out Cruyff was lying having a massage on the table. "He shouted on me, took his top off and said he would swap with me because I scored a great goal. I didn’t want any of the other tops after that, I got the main man´s.”
