If Tanya Oxtoby wanted Northern Ireland’s trip to Gdansk to be a learning experience then she got exactly that. The key thing that she will have gleaned from the opening game of the Nations League campaign is that her team isn’t far off the bracket of teams in behind Europe’s elite. Poland, who are heading to the Women’s Euro 2025 Finals in July, did come out 2-0 winners thanks to two goals in the space of just three minutes from Ewelina Kamczyk and Adriana Achcinska during a whirlwind spell in the first half that saw other chances at both ends, but they weren’t poles apart. The difference that one player of real class can make, however, is huge. The outstanding Ewa Pajor caused no end of problems for Northern Ireland in the first half, showing fantastic skill in setting up the second goal and going close to adding a third moments later. After the break there was little between the teams who are 16 places apart in the world rankings.
